It's such a shame that the CD died.

Yes. The "run its course" comments are baffling. I've seen them in all of the RSD threads. These types of ideas take years to catch on and they are really a no lose thing for everyone. If RSD doesn't work it will go away along with the small stores.

Unfortunately a lot of the public a) hate record companies and the idea they need to make a profit and b) are selfish, impulsive consumers who can't stand the idea of not getting something they want, to hell with record stores.

They might still have some here, plus the Superchunk singles are usually cheap on eBay in a week or two. It's a much darker green then "coke bottle clear" implied. I thought it was going to be the same color as the Precision Auto single. Still haven't listened to it though, jsut got around to opening everything.

Purchase of the year so far Blind Melon, can't believe they put that package together for $24.

Wait till we have cassette tape day. I saw a bunch of new ones in the showcase of the store I was in today. Strange

This isn't going to get the average fan back into vinyl.

Regarding flipping, I had a suggestion to the guy standing in line next to me: Don't let anyone in unless they bring their cartridge!

How early did you show up? I arrived an hour before the record store opened, and the line was pretty long. I've got a feeling I may have to get there at least four hours before. Don't know if I'd pull an all nighter, though it sounds tempting!

The best part is all the businesses up there love the day and work the line giving samples and coupons. Except for the Dinner next door to Park Ave. Instead of setting up in the parking lot and selling food every year, they yell at us for being there. Not for blocking their door, jsut for being there. The cooks will literally come out and yell at us.

Well this year there is a city councilman representing the Mayor on PA system telling us how amazing the event is and thanking the store and the customers....

I wish I could have seen their faces in the restaurant.

We were laughing at the kids (I say "kids" meaning teenagers) in line behind us who raced into the store when it was their turn... just to buy the MGMT cassette single. That's all they needed.... No vinyl, no CDs.... We laughed.

I say not to get frustrated by flippers but I really, really wanted a copy of Blind Melon...and they're going for $80 on eBay now...

I called 4 places and no one had anymore... :'( My shop only got 6 copies!

Today at my store I saw some items from RSD's past. You just never know what's going to remain.

I put a bid out on the Elliott Smith on eBay and the listing was then canceled. That tells me the dude never had it when he made the listing, but planned on getting it.

I got there 2 hours before they opened (well, they opened 30 minutes early, so 1.5 hours).

Reason being that I can't drive, so it's the earliest I could get my girlfriend up to take me. I have vision problems.

...I just wanted a copy of Blind Melon really bad...I could deal with not getting BIG, The Cure, and Dazed & Confused...

So you are visually sizing people up to determine if they are a flipper or not?

Ok, here is a simple excercise. Start tracking all of the complete auctions for any item we know has a set release amount (ie. No Alternative comp had 3500 numbered releases) for a week (or 2 or 4 weeks). I think REAL data would really put this to bed. Then again, there will always be people who will argue the sky is not blue and will point to other areas for sale like Discogs, Kijijiji, yard sales, etc.

I have been every year so far. I have enjoyed every year so far... except some of what happened today. The line was at least 3-4 times longer than in the past which was no problem except the store got really crowded, really quick. There were a few people who were just pushing in front of others and scooping up everything without even looking at what they were getting. One guy (I think, hope and pray was trying to get me out of his way) started humping on my leg until I cracked him in the balls. I took a friend who had never been to such a thing and he was able to get the R.E.M. cd but lamented that more of the releases weren't on cd. I love vinyl and was able to get the Gary Clark Jr. and Old 97's releases so (humping aside) i got what i was looking for. I will listen to my records repeatedly and don't intend to sell them. I even plan on getting each signed next time i get to see these artists.

My RSD actually went pretty smoothly. Woke up early (or so I thought) and got in line around 7:30 for a 9 AM opening. Turns out I was probably 60 back. And it's a TINY store so the owner only let in 10 folks at a time.

That said, I made friends with the people in line, and once inside the shopping experience was very pleasant simply because of the limitations on the crowd. We were actually helping each other out ("Here's that Cure you wanted," "Any more of the Biggie?" etc) as we scanned the stock... And of course, the 1 item per person rule really helps.

I didn't get everything I wanted (no Sigur Ros, no Porno For Pyros, no Big Star) but I got most of it... including a few nice things others on this thread missed out on, like The Cure, Blind Melon, and Nick Drake... Spent way too much money but it's for a good cause!

I must buy the wrong stuff because everything I brought home is selling on eBay for about what paid - including the Big Star set (which is readily available for decent prices). Obviously there are impulse Buy It Now prices and some over-bidding but those are meaningless.

I saw some people today that were grabbing everything in sight without even looking. I suspect these were the scum suckers.

Every year there is one guy who is first in line, he gets there at 11pm the night before. I think he buys one of everything in the store. He's an old guy looks like he knows nothing about records. Every year I wonder how much of his hoard is ending up on eBay.

Just make it simple . . . they have to name their turntable brand and the kind of cart it uses. That's all. :D
