I grew up with a lot of Beach Boys albums in stereo I guess, so there's a lot of love for those. But yes ANY AND ALL Beach Boy albums should be heard in Brian Wilson approved MONO. All caps on the MONO!

It has already been mentioned, but I also nominate Pink Floyd's Piper At the Gates of Dawn as being essential (like Pepper) in both mono and stereo presentations. The stereo mix has a lot of period atmospherics which have a kind of amateurish charm, but the mono is much more direct and "in your face".

The Pretty Things S.F. Sorrow is a another noteworthy mono mix.

With that foreground changing so frequently the mono is a real trip. Spellbinding, actually. Few mixes are so elaborate, mono or stereo.

Miles Smiles feels like a different performance, it's so alive with energy.

Other standout jazz monos include Thelonious Monk's Monk's Music, Live at the Blackhawk and The Jazz Messengers With Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus's Ah-Um and Mingus Dynasty, and probably anything recorded by anybody on Atlantic in the late 50's and early 60's.

An Ornette Coleman Atlantic mono box is even more called for than the John Coltrane was.

Good point. I should add all Monk on Columbia and all Coltrane on Atlantic. All Aretha on Atlantic too.

For a recently recorded LP, check out Daniel Romano's 'Mosey' from last year. It's a beautiful flawless pressing as well.

Great album. I have only heard the stereo version but now you got me interested. But as far as I can see there is no modern re-issues on vinyl in mono (at least official ones, according to discogs). I really wish the pink floyd records RE came in stereo and mono, because I can definitely vouch for the pressing quality of that one.

John Mayall, "Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton". I didn't really "get" this album until I heard the punchier, livelier mono mix.

The mono mix is best heard on the 3-CD set released a few years ago. The vinyl/CD reissue from 1997 is complete garbage. Avoid!

I wouldn't be surprised if we see Piper at the Gates of Dawn by the end of the year.
