I am embarrassed I allowed this amazing band to pass me by in the 80's. Too busy with school I guess. Trying to make up for it now.

Yeah, I only knew the popular favorites from Substance in high school, wasn't until Republic came out in college I started to really get into them. Just wish I had seen them live back then!

Thanks, Levitated. I just caught this as I was stepping out the door to the record store. I made a note of the 3 or 4 London Centre Dates that have the same mastering as the original FACTs so I could choose either.

I'm hoping to track down some of these (as well as some Smiths RTs, per advice on a different thread on the boards) at Amoebas.

You might want to pick up the UK hardback edition of the Factory Illustrated Guide. A great resource to ALL the orig. Factory releases.

  8. ...well the UK Factory disc I have (bought in the week of it's release) does have Made in Japan on it. However, this disc is the standard disc that was sold in the UK at the time. This disc also has pre-emphasis.

Could one of you post peak levels for the Japan 25CY Low-life?

I just checked, I actually have:

FACD 100 Made in Japan w/ matrix C38-7413 & 1A5 66 on the other side of the hub.
Peak levels as I posted earlier match your JPN & Theadman's :

    Low Life FACD 100 JPN 1A5 66 C38-7413
    85.1/82.6/75.2/73.0/82.3/81.8/95.7/72.6

Is there a made in UK (NIMBUS) or France MPO of Low Life? I wonder what the London corresponds to if anything?

Also, just to be clear my JPN PC&L is as follows:

    PC&L JPN 1A1 6X CY-1219
    94.2/94.8/100.0/93.6/83.8/100.0/96.9/88.7

    Sorry for any confusion.

Those levels won't mean much though, will they? This one has the PE flag I believe.

I didn't have any luck at Amoeba Music, so as I begin to hunt for these online I'm wondering if anybody has any further comments on the bonus tracks of the various (corrected) Collection's Editions.

One of the Collector's Editions that sticks out to me, for example, is Movement because it seems that I might enjoy whats on the bonus disc more than the album proper.

anybody particularly pleased with any of the second discs in these sets?

Well, I had a good look at my PC&L cd from around 2000 from Warners.

As I understand, in the EU there have been 4 issues:

    Original Factory
    London
    Warners
    Deluxe editions

Now my Warners CD says on the back 'previously issued as 520 0192', which is the London number. It also has copyright 1983 and 1993 CentreDate.

So it seems this 2000 edition is exactly the same as the London CD. Which would confirm what someone said up thread about all issues having the same mastering until the deluxe editions.

I would imagine if all of that is correct then the easiest way to get the original mastering is these EU Warners ones from around 2000.

The tracklists? Yes, definitely, all of them. The quality, not so much :thumbsdn:

I'm still hoping the New Order Recycle fan project will either get an official release or the authors will release the lossless versions instead of the AAC ones.

I too am thinking about buying PC&L, Low-life and Brotherhood on CD for the first time and I am wondering if they have ever corrected the bonus disks in the UK... If so, has anyone found a way to identify the corrected remasters in the UK market? I have checked some of them at HMV and they are all dated 2008...

The original Factory discs aren't that special sound-wise. They are thin-sounding and have that digital graininess you hear in old 1980's digital masters. Of course, so do the Quests and the early Japan discs.

The Quest CDs screw up "Power, Corruption, & Lies" by sticking Blue Monday right into the middle of the track order, plus the packaging/booklets are all cheap-looking.

The Warner Japan "Forever Young" series are (relatively) easy to find, get the sleeves/track order right (i.e. they match the original Factory's), and they sound pretty much the same.

The new deluxe edition remasters also sound good, like very slightly 'sweetened' versions of the original discs. They are not brickwalled or anything like that. It's the bonus discs in the deluxe editions that have the compressed, congested sound.

AFAIK, the UK London discs are still screwed up. Ordering the corrected (US Rhino) versions from the States seems to be the only guaranteed way of not being stuck with flawed discs.

I guess it's easier to cry about file sharing than replace faulty products on shop shelves. Perhaps they expect me to buy a faulty product and then sort out the problem with an illegal download when I find out!

This has all been a tremendous help to me, and hopefully to others (maybe in the future) as well.

But I just thought of one other album...Substance.

As mentioned I have the Qwest. Was this done by Factory (wasn't sure since its not a proper album, persay) as well and, if you have it, how is the sound? Since I'm probably not going to get the majority of New Order's 2-disc Collector's Editions (maybe just Movement and Low-Life), I think I'll still want to hear those various singles and B-Sides in the best form I can.

    Any Substance enthusiasts out there?

I don't have any personal experience with the Factory Substance, but I have only ever read on this forum that it used the same mastering as the Qwest.
