Saw Ian last night. Wow! I've seen him about 10 times, including with Ronson, Ringo, and Mott opening for Queen. Last night's show was. Un. Bee. Lee. Va. Able. 2 hours. 5 encores. Set list (as written on the set list I got): Trouble Once Bitten Fatally Flawed When I’m President Saint The Truth Morpheus Just Another Night Fingers Crossed A A Alien Boy Dandy Bow Street Runners Roll Away the Stone Wish I Was Your Mother Ghosts 23a Swan Hill Bastard Sweet Jane Encore Irene Memphis Long Time Life Dudes
Awesome that amongst all his own great songs that he is still doing (a cover by Mott of) Sweet Jane in the setlist.
Excellent. Thoughts so far? (I'm still chipping away at my set and I got it the day it came out! Makes for a nice listening project. )
Bearing in mind the staggering amount of content that is in there, the box is compact. I do like the book. It has an amount of info I didn't know. The signed A4 lithograph is nice to have, though I have Ian's signature a few times already. I have a lot of the music already and those CD's are shrink-wrapped still, so I haven't had a proper look at them to compare to the originals. The Shades newspaper is a nice collection of press clippings and ads. Nicely done. I'm concentrating on the extras. The acoustic CD is quite interesting. Working my way through the 3 Box Of Tricks CD's at the moment - they will take a few listens to sink it. The much heralded song 'Salvation' that Ina has been saving to be the last song on his last album doesn'tr grab me, but maybe it will with a few more hearings. The 2 DVD's: The first has some very slight image quality issues, due to the age of the footage, but it's as good as you could hope for, considering.. The second is going to get a play tomorrow if I get a chance.
Assume that was a slip of the keyboard (?)... 'twas the other way round... Queen famously opened for Mott on that tour. Only time they ever opened for anybody. Thanks for the review and set list... I have tix to see Ian at the Fillmore - San Francisco in September... seems a long way off. Essentially the same set from last fall... but glad to see 'Morpheus' has been added... looking forward to that.
I think I'll finish this box set in 14 years. Yikes. It's just a lot of stuff. Anyone else have any news, thoughts, reviews, critiques, etc. on this set?
I'm still chipping away at this monster set. Just played the Hunter Ronson Band Live at the BBC. Phew. It almost melted my stereo.
As for the actual albums, I'm up to WIP... I skipped When I'm President and went to Live in the UK 2010 [since chronology wise, it's before], so I need to go back and listen to WIP. I have listened to most of the bonus discs and watched the DVD's...
I haven't even put a dent in mine. I just hope I live long enough to get through the whole damn thing.
I know. It's crazy huge. I just played the BBC disc with Ronson. Man, that show almost blew my stereo apart!!
I got side-tracked with Drivin' n Cryin' and haven't picked up a disc from this set in a while. How 'bout you?
I stalled out just before When I'm President. Half tempted to give each decade a thorough pass as a self-contained affair before moving on rather than to try to take in the entire narrative arc...
It's such a mammoth box set, I keep getting side tracked as well. Still stuck at When I'm President... Oh, well, it will give years of joy!
