If SMiLE had been completed in 1967, who thinks it would have blown Sgt. Pepper out of the water?

I think SMiLE could have been a worthy competitor to Pepper. We'll never know, but what do you think?

I do and always have. If not in terms of general popularity, I at least think it would've been the artistic standard that people tried to beat.

I agree. When I listen to it, I can't help but think what a shame it is that Brian couldn't keep it together and finish this masterpiece at the time it was meant to be heard.

I don't think it would have blown Sgt. Pepper out of the water at all.

Well SMiLE is my favorite BB work and Sgt. Pepper isn't even in my top 7 favorite Beatles albums so of course I believe it would have.

It's in your graphic (which is really clever, btw!)

    "INSIDE: SCORECARDS, BUIGRAPHIES, PICTURES,...." etc.

Not exactly. It isn't as commercial as Sgt Pepper. I think it would have been received similarly to Pet Sounds and, like Pet Sounds, it would have simply grown in stature as the years went on.

I know! The instrumentation is other worldly.
Surf's Up could have been the anthem to the Summer of Love.

I take it the Beach Boys are the Duophonic part and the Beatles the stereo part.

    Nope.

Pet Sounds is better than Smile anyway.

But "Good Vibrations" is already the perfect "Summer of Love" anthem. There's something very dark and mysterious about "Surf's Up" that I just can't put my finger on.
So many beautiful moments on the album. (The beat drop in "Love to Say Da Da",The building and fading outro on "Cabin Essence",The "clown horns" that breaks you out of that deep spell on "My Only Sunshine",etc.)

Sorry for crashing the thread a moment ago, but my OCD kicked in over that cover! :)

Seriously though, as a HUGE Smile fan, I would like to think that the '67 release of Smile would have been a game changer, dwarfing even Sgt. Pepper. Realistically, it's hard to speculate what the public would have done with this masterpiece. It may have gone completely unnoticed, depending on what kind of promotion it got. In hindsight, the saga could have played out any number of ways.

  25. Only if the Beach Boys had shaven their heads and sung it all in German. Boy these threads ........
