Well, The Who were already inventing that genre before 1966, so I think it would've been just fine. :)

I could think of worse way to end your career than with "Tomorrow Never Knows" as your last song. But it would've provided endless speculation over what would've come next.

In 1970 Paul McCartney, Keith Moon & Jimi Hendrix form a power band called Helter Skelter.

    Re: Lennon and drugs

Maybe more of an acid casualty. He already looked like a different person from late '66 on...sharp, gaunt cheekbones and stringy hair.

But he seemed pretty lost in the actual post-'66 reality anyway. All the stuff about "Maharishi slipping me the answer" and getting into heroin, to say nothing of getting together with Yoko...dude was searching for something, and that manifested itself well beyond the life of the Beatles.

The Rolling Stones would have taken their mantle and maybe Mick would've been killed and martyred instead. :/

Who knows! It definitely would have been them though, unless John or Paul began a new band that could have subsumed The Beatles' place.

Yet The Beatles were already the proto-typical power pop band arguably in 1963. If you listen to "Twist and Shout" I hear the pounding drums and clanging guitar sounds that is typical of The Who two years later. You can debate these points and never come up with a true answer.

If the Beatles had split up in 1966...

We wouldn't have to hear anything about Carnival of Light.

    Glenn....?

In 1966 when Revovler came out there was really no term called progressive rock. I don't think The Beatles were ever progressive rock except maybe a few tracks on Sgt. Pepper and Abbey Road but their influence on early progressive rock was much more than say Frank Zappa or even early Pink Floyd who were very Beatles influenced in the first place. By the way "Strawberry Fields Forever" had to be a huge influence on progressive rock right?

'I Want To Hold Your Hand' is power pop, too. Throw in the Kinks' 'You Really Got Me', 'All Day And All Night', etc., and power pop is already rolling.
