I can't think of anyone who do polished pop, rock with the jazzy sophistication of Steely Dan. More than enough acts with components but as a whole it becomes harder to find someone who resembles... Except "The Nightfly" by Donald Fagen. :righton:

Café Jacques. Two very good LPs from the late 70s with excellent production values.

    Good track.

Another pick is: Livin' On The Fault Line (The Doobie Brothers)...very jazzy and it has interesting chord changes. There are two main "Dan" links on that track, which giver it a jazzy edge...Jeff "Skunk" Baxter and Victor Feldman.

It may but the female vocals were more background than lead. I honestly can't remember Eye to Eye!

My original post was from a while back. TALC--and their website--appear to now be defunct :sigh:

I second these. I actually did this in reverse. I was into Rickie first, absolutely loved Flying Cowboys and saw an interview with her talking about working with Walter Becker. That led me to Steely Dan, who I had only previously known for their radio hits. Rickie isn't sonically identical to the Dan, but they have a similar...aesthetic, I suppose. Wonderful stuff.

To this day since it's release, I've called "The Nightfly", the greatest Steely Dan album ever made.

While there's no one quite like the mighty Steely Dan, I'd say that Joe Jackson comes the closest. JJ has employed a true variety of musical styles over the course of his career but his jazz-inflected stuff is like a kissing-cousin to Steely Dan's material imo. "Steppin' Out", possibly JJ's best known tune, is certainly a great example. Here's another one:

That's actually my favorite Doobie album of all. "You're Made That Way" and "There's a Light" are my favorite tracks.

I never got the love for the Rosie Vela album. I can't warm up to it at all.

    At least they're lossless.

But, you do have to dig deeper for the longer, cold end version of "Please Please Please Me".

I have to agree, I'm starting to believe there is no album that can compare to its impact on me.

To me it sounded very Dan, maybe not so Steely when it came out.
