Why is that funny? Not everything they sell is particle board.

Only some colours have the "new" tag. Maybe they're referring to new colours? The design and specs look exactly the same.

  4. Really! I know they have some wood veneers but I've never seen any solid wood furniture there except for the meatballs. :tiphat:

They are most likely thinking of shipping cost as the prices for shipping the Expidits were crazy high.

The Observators? Hells yeah... thankfully I bought enough for every shelf on my current set of Billys (which they also no longer make in the color I originally bought, a reddish/burgundy color). I always figured if I needed more down the line they should be easy enough to make from MDF and some dowels / biscuits / pocket screws.

Have you tried their Swedish meatballs? They're excellent!

I used the 8" deep Besta units to create a nice storage system for my Cds/DVDs. Shortly after putting them together a year to so ago, I could no longer find them at the Ikea site. After reading your post, I just checked again, and it seems like they're back in stock in several sizes. I highly recommend the shallow Bestas over the Billy system as there are a lot more options with sliding doors, etc.

Here's the BestA set-up I put together for my CD/DVD storage. I used the online IKEA BestA Planner to get the images. It uses 2 8" deep cabinets, 8 extra shelves, and one door with sliding rails. Cost is around $155. The left side is for CD storage, the right side is for DVD storage. The sliding door covers one side at a time leaving the other side open.

No, the unit I put together does not float off the floor as in the illustration. I had to do that in order to get a good camera angle in the Planner app.

EDIT: Actually, it looks like the piece I put together in the planner is NOT the same as my actual unit. The one pictured is only 51" high. The one in my living room is 76" high, and it appears that size unit is no longer available from IKEA.

Yesterday I picked up two of the 4 cubed units. I think they are great cheap look good worth every penny. However if you plan to hang it on the wall beware that each shelf has a weight limit of 29 lbs. I would not trust it filled with records hanging on the wall.

I have it sitting on a small cabinet and both screwed into the wall. So at least weight is transferred to the floor, not the anchor points in the wall.

How much does an album weight with jacket? 150 grams? I know the vinyl itself is usually 120g unless it's 180g. You can get about 75 per cube packed, maybe 60 if they are loose enough to be practical. So doing the math I estimate that 4 cubes would be about 80 lbs, 20 lbs per cube shelf. That is well within the tolerance but there is no way I'd hang it on the wall with even half that. I don't think the bracket is strong enough for that.

Yeah, they discontinued it a couple months after I put my system together. It was my intention to add an additional unit right next to the existing one as the collection grew, but now that's out the window. I suppose I could use the 51" system next to it instead, and put something decorative on top of the smaller unit, or hang something on the wall above it. Bummer.

I guess it's also possible to get the 2 51" units and stack a 25" double unit on top. Not exactly the same, and would require the 51" sliding door, and a 25" sliding door on top. Could look kind of cool, actually.

I was back at IKEA today to get part of a desk setup that was out of stock last week and sure enough, every Expedit in the place had the yellow "Last Chance" flags flying, some right next to the "NEW!" proclamation.

My Ikea also has the Expedit marked as last chance. I just bought a 5x5 unit last month, and need to get back in for another.

Just picked up the 2x4 and 2x2 unit yesterday at the Philadelphia store and I did not noticed any signs about Last Chance. The area where the Expedits were set up was buzzing with people though.

On another note, I heard laying them on the side you need to reinforce the shelfs possibly with L brackets? Anyone heard of this?

The Conchy store had the signs everywhere in that area this weekend but I hadn't noticed any the weekend before. We're you at the south Philly one?

For the last few years I've been thinking there is good money to be made in having a specialist site, or shop that supplies discontinued Ikea furniture, I know so many people who just didn't buy enough CD units, shelves, doors, etc., before the unit/colour was discontinued.

Has anyone in the UK been to Ikea recently are we losing Expedits as well? It's the end of civilisation as far as I'm concerned.

Yes South Philly. I'm wondering if I should go buy more this weekend if they really are changing them for the worse. The price is right to stock up on some 2x2 or 2x4 :)

Although the units are finished on all sides, they do have a right way to be placed. They have to be stood so that the long, continuous shelf/dividers are horizontal, not vertical. I believe one of the last pages of the instruction booklet illustrates this. Otherwise they are prone to collapse. The other Expedit thread contains some photos of what happened when people didn't set their Expedit right side up, and then filled all the shelves with heavy objects. Yikes!

You are correct. There is nothing in the instructions that spells out the dangers of orienting the unit horizontally. In fact, on page 15, it shows the unit positioned both vertically and horizontally, and also shows the unit receiving wheels oriented horizontally.

My guess is that it only becomes an issue once you get into the 4x4 or greater configurations. It's likely that the 2x4 unit used horizontally - even when full - does not have enough weight on the 4 short shelves to cause a collapse. I don't recall seeing any photos of a horizontal 2x4 unit that has collapsed, only the 4x4/5x5 units.
