I have molding. I just purchased a longer wood screw to attached to the stud. They sell them in copious quantities at Home Depot for ten cents a piece. I don't use the bolt to attach the shelf to the wall, just as a brace.

Oh wait, is THAT the only reason they couldn't attach theirs to the wall?

My solution was to head to Home Depot and find some pre-primed MDF rectangular molding the same thickness as my baseboards and about 2-3" wide. I had them cut to length about 1" narrower than the Expedit. I then mounted these strips of MDF to the wall, with two screws in each stud along the entire length. I then screwed the Expedit brackets to the strip. By doing this the units are solidly attached to the wall and they are completely immobilized.

I think the NORNÄS bookcase version (vertical) is the answer for me. Line 5 or 6 of these up and I am set! Has the reinforced back, legs keep it off the floor in case of any flooding or whatnot... and as mentioned, available in US now. Looks super solid, plan to go check them out soon.

That looks interesting, I must check them out, unfortunately at £130 they are a lot more in the UK than the US.

    On another forum I read:

"With solid pine you can have resin bleeding out of the knots..."

    any truth to this statement?

That's a no go if it's true. I like my kallax's anyway. But for those who don't realize the sap, that could really suck!

The site states that they can be "painted, oiled or stained according to preference" I am not a wood expert, but could you use some kind of finish that would "seal"? Or I read online that a trick is to take a torch (propane, today) to it and bleed out all the pitch.

    Woodworkers care to comment????

My LPs are in bags, worst case, I lose a few bags. Or, shelf paper products would be an easy fix too.

Sap eats through car paint. It would eventually eat through your bags as well.

The Nornas bookcase ($159 for 2x4) are more than double the expense of Kallax ($64.99 for 2x4 or $139 for 4x4).

I plan to expand my shelving by getting Kallax to fill a wall with 8x6 (two 4x44 plus 2 2x4) and then reutilizing or selling my Expidit 5x5 plus three 1x5 units)

I currently have a 2x2 stacked on top of a 2x4. It leaves about 6" from the ceiling. I love the look. Its like a short wall of vinyl.

You should "seal" bare wood, the "work" side anyway, to keep it clean (and to facilitate cleaning)
This goes even if you want to keep the "natural" look of the wood
A light coat of nitrocellulose lacquer (clear) over bare Pine will seal out (in) any possible sap problems
You can brush it or get it in spray cans; probably the easiest solution
That's only one option; there are MANY, depends on what you want and how far you wish to go

Then their are the plastic finishes (I will not use) like "Varathane" (one of the many polyurethanes) etc..........but they take forever to really fully cure

Advice wood be contingent on the level and type of finish you wanted to accomplish, but for just sealing things up on bare Pine, use lacquer

Pain in the ass to remove but I've never had it EAT paint (I am originally from North Carolina so an familiar with the Pine tree crap)

Most of the damage I have seen was the result of folks trying to get it off the car (the wrong way!)

If left on a car, pine tree sap will most certainly eat through the clear coat. Keep up with it, and yes it can be removed without issue.

    ...back to the kallax...

I want to see the wood first hand and determine if it is really an issue?
Most of the searching I do about IKEA unfinished pine turns up people wanting to protect the wood from spills and such.
I do not find complaints about resin / sap seeping...?

I thought we were talking about a real paint job

Checked out the NORNÄS bookcase, the fit and finish was not stellar.

While there, I did see the 5x5 Kallax.
It is not shown online, but is in the store [item #: 703.057.95] for $199.
I figured this would cost me half what the NORNÄS would, so, I bought two of them.
Will report back once built and loaded.

Yeah...I'm not to hip on the looks of that NORNÄS either. It just looks like plywood to me.
I'm glad the 5x5's are trickling into stock.
