I'm getting rid of all my lift cases used for DCC discs

I am almost sure that my Nat King Cole DCC disc was damaged due to someone not properly using the lift case. I'll bet that someone opened the jewel box and pulled on the CD without using the lift device. I'm going to replace all of my lift cases with standard jewel boxes. Plus, I'm going to make copies of all my DCC discs and put the originals in storage. These discs are irreplaceable.

I'll bet you're right about how your disc got damaged...those cases are really strange; never understood the point of them....I'd suggest this. At first those custom CD cases drove me crazy: open them up too fast and the disc would flip right out, usually on the carpet. Well, enough of that: I began changing over to regular CD cases(but kept the originals). Once I got my PC and burner, the obvious became clear: burn a copy of all the music that seems to get some regular rotation, and just put the originals back where they belonged, in the original cases, too. So your idea of making copies of cherished DCC's is totally sound. However, I'd rather hide my discs somewhere really safe(if necessary)than change the original packaging in any way. Whatever you decide for sure, at the least keep the original packaging just in case you need it for selling purposes later(yes, that day, scary and unthinkable as it may seem now, might come).

I'm lucky; I don't have people living around me who go playing around with anything in my collection(and vice versa). Any house with children, especially, you gotta really put those discs somewhere way out of the way. Or bad things could happen....

    Good luck,

Johnny, I remember buying a DCC gold disc somewhere in Penn. once. The guy at the counter told me how to open the case properly! He also mentioned that they used to have a LOT of returns on the "lift=lock" case as people did not know how to operate them!

Before anyone gets too amazed over this, I must say that a lot of the time my lift lock cases don't open properly - the CD never lifts. Or maybe they are old cases?

That's a good idea replacing the case - the CD could get damaged!

It's amazing how often the lift lock cases do not release the disk. Everytime that that happened to me in the past I would say to myself, "Someday I'm gonna crack a disk".

I like these cases, so if you're thinking of throwing them away, PM or e-mail me and I'll send you the address of the landfill's proprietor. ;)

If you have the time, perhaps you could make a profit and sell them on ebay, even if it's only for a little money, but IMO you're better off saving them like Ed suggested Johnny, even if you just put them in a box sealed in the attic.

That's a good idea. I have a few CDs that I got from Ebay with cracks in the spindle hole - I made CD-R copies of those, so as not to make the cracks in the originals even bigger through handling/playing.

I ended up replacing most of mine as well. And didn't DCC stop using them after a while?

For me, the lift-locks earned the scornful nickname, "eject-o box" (after "jewel box"), due to the inevitable spills that happened when a neophyte handled one. I understood the advantage of storing the CD in air, as it were, but the potential for disaster outweighed the very slight gain in storage safety.

I lost a gold disc of Miles Davis after someone at work attempted to place it back in the eject-o box and dropped it. Luckily, a replacement was still available for the original price.

I know my copy of LUSH LIFE came in a regular jewel case....but as I bought it used, can't swear that should have been the original case for it(but it was a promo copy, so what the hell...who cares?).

I just hate those Shape jewel cases...and you don't have to be a neophyte to have them pop up on you, they seem to almost have minds of their own. Anything like that is the devil; so I burned my faves and just leave the originals to lie, slowly gaining collector value.

Wow, I hadn't realized there were so many problems associated with the lift-lock cases. Makes you kind of wish that Mofi and DCC and gone with the over-sized mini LP [oh no, not *that* again!].

Anyone who wants to get rid of these "Lift-lock" cases I'll take em'!

I don't mind someone playing a CD of their own on my equipment but no one but my Mrs. and me touches the "great" part of my collection. They never leave my home unless I'm taking them out for some fresh air and to try new equipment.;)

I ruined my DCC gold disc of CCR Bayou Country because of those ƒµç<pi>ˆ@! things, put a nasty scratch on it that I could see straight through! Luckily, the SACDs are out now, but that still won't replace the collectors value I lost. At least I'll have the pleasure of hearing great versions of 'Bootleg' and 'Born on The Bayou' without any nasty digital hiccuping.

If you have children, they need instruction on how to use the lift locks. My 12 year old tryed to force the disc and almost ruined Nat King Cole's
    Greatest.

Yes, it is recommended to take the discs out for a walk periodically. Good exercise for them. You don't need to play Frisbee with them, however, as you might while taking a family dog for a walk. That is NOT recommended. :D

I like the lift-locks - I don't get the antagonism against them. They put less stress on the CD as I remove it.

I'm curious about one thing, though. I have five McCartney DCCs - all except "McCartney". (Need it - trades available for anyone who has it!) Three of the five use the lift-lock, but the other two - "Speed of Sound" and "Venus and Mars" - offer standard jewel cases. Do ALL copies of those releases use standard jewel cases? Interestingly, I bought both "Speed of Sound" and "V&M" at the same Internet retailer. Not worried that they aren't legit - this place is WAY too big to sell pirated discs - but it's odd my only two non-lift-lock DCCs came from them...
