Does anybody recall that Uncut had special standalone issues devoted to specific artists, a few years before they launched the actual Ultimate Music Guide series ? I vaguely recall issues on U2 and Elvis, but I'd have to check my collections to be sure
I think U2 and Elvis, because I may have bought those. And I think there was a Dylan one as well. Also, remember that Mojo had a very similar series as well for several years. It covered a lot of the same artists (Beatles, Stones, Zep, Who, Dylan), with special issues devoted to Punk and even a Country Rock one featuring Neil Young and The Band, amonst others. I bought a lot of those, and now wish I had picked up more.
There's actually a lengthy article on them in this month's Mojo- probably the best you can expect ....
You should check post #71 on page 3 of this very thread - I believe I posted pics of a few. In praise of Uncut's 'Ultimate Music Guide'
It would be nice to see a George Harrison issue, surely there are plenty interviews in the archives. I really want to pick up the Bowie issue, that is the main one I am missing, and with the box coming at the end of the month I think it would be a good companion piece.
Anybody bought the new Prince issue yet? I'm curious as to whether they review all of the mail-order and other obscure albums he released in the 1990s and 2000s, such as Xpectation and The Chocolate Invasion. I'm guessing they will all be lumped into one aggregate review rather than individual reviews for each of those albums.
I've not got it yet, I'm visiting family this weekend so know I wouldn't get a chance to look at it, but will pick it up early next week and report back if nobody else has commented.
It depends on the artist and (sometimes) the editing. I think the Van Morrison-issue could have been a far richer experience. Looking forward to the Prince-issue, though!
Compared to the current issues of Uncut and Mojo they're 50% more expensive...but they're worth that content-wise and the current magazines are about 30% commercials, 20% recycled stories and they seemed to have found a way to print on cigarette-paper these days. Better quality, far more interesting content; I think it's a good deal!
They are great and I buy every issue, but I will never see the day where I find £11 for a magazine palatable.
See my post #770- I don't think the Moodies quite fit the direction the UMGs are going in. This has nothing to do whether you or I think they are good or bad, or whether we like them or not...
direction? UMG have to know what their public want not the other way about. Just a question of balance.
I tweeted the editor of Uncut last year to ask about the chances of an Ultimate Music Guide for ELO. His reply was: " I don't think so unfortunately: they were hardly ever interviewed by NME and Melody Maker".
