    Guys,

"My World Fell Down" - Sagittarius

Recorded at Gold Star with Glen Campbell on lead vocals.

Well, except the 45 version of "Nights" isn't stripped down, it's only missing the intro and outro orchestra and a few flourishes here and there; the mix--and Mike Pinder--more than make up for the orchestra's absence. But, different strokes....

"I'll Never Need More Than This"--Ike & Tina Turner

Phil's last chart single before the hiatus that eventually led him to the brief deal with A&M in '69. Only Bubbled Under, but boy, underrated: not quite "River Deep" but not that far away quality-wise, either.

"There Goes My Baby" - The Drifters.

Sometimes, you can't have too much echo.
It sounds pretty good on CD on disc 4 of the Atlantic Rhythm & Blues 1947-1974 series of discs.

Great use of echo as well, and just a great record; never get enough of it!

A great MONO only track, right Ed?

Yes. Rumor had it years ago that an underdub in stereo existed, but if so, it has yet to be released anywhere(wonder if Bartley ever played it on his show?).

Too bad; it was the only rechanneled track on her Bell Lp from '68.:(

    "Tragedy"--Bee Gees

One of THE best songs of the disco era--rocking more than most--and it really sizzles, not least thanks to the synth work of Blue Weaver. From the moment I put the 45 on the TT, it jumped out with the kind of abandon that was rarer in disco-styled music than one might think. Still has that adrenalin kick; one of their best!

Yep, this is BIG, no mistake about it. An epic, really, and I would swear there's a bit of Jarre's LAWRENCE OF ARABIA score buried in there somewhere....

    "He's Gone"--Chantels

From the genius of George Goldner....no knock on "Maybe" and some other fine singles, but this early entry sets up Phil Spector nicely...and you can be sure he was listening...

    "I Got You Babe"--Sonny & Cher

In Mark Ribowsky's book about Phil Spector, Sonny is referred at one point as "Phil's stooge," IIRC(or maybe Sonny said that--very possible). Maybe he was pretty much Phil's gofer, yesman, and all around percussionist-when-needed, but he was no fool, or stooge: he was listening, observing, and learning. "Baby Don't Go" was his first foray into trying to capture the Spector Sound: he missed, but months later, he got it right with this #1 classic. I'm sure he used many of the players and production people Phil did(if they were available, I know I would have!!), and he did a nice job.
Easy to forget Bono had been in the industry for almost a decade by the time he got his first real shot at a front-line gig, and he made the most of it. "But You're Mine" and "Just You" remain the most endearing of the S&C hits while with Atco, but this first one surprised everybody, justifiably so.
It takes me right back to the summer of '65, a time musically I could live in as if in a "Groundhog Day" kind of loop.

How about Simon & Garfunkel's "The Boxer"? Or "The Only Living Boy in New York," "El Condor Pasa," or anything from their last album, BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER, certainly one of the greatest Big Production statements in pop.

I think Paul Simon broke up the duo after that album because there really was nowhere to go, artistically or commercially, after BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER.

Fortunately, this classic Big Production received the digital transfer it deserved at the hands of engineer Vic Anesini.

    Ed and Bob,

Yeah, there is an underdub out there which is very interesting to hear. It is NOT true to the mono single though, as it doesn't have the "double" vocal. It is a bit dry. I found it on Napster or some such place. Interesting for STEREO fans...not for the HIT VERSION loyalists, though!
