Blair can believe what he wants; if it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, sounds like a duck...instructive how many surf comps it's turned up on over the years. As far as I'm concerned, it's surf; anything else is parsing. Besides, my idea of a surf music expert is John Tefteller, who is an expert on just about anything vinyl. Hope Tim Neely checks out this thread; like to know what he thinks.

    Another one--Waikikis: Tall Cool One.

I'll take The Ventures 1964 WIPE OUT if it hasn't been mentioned.

The sound of surfing...surfing to the package store for a case of beer!

You know how it is, Bob: surfing really works up a thirst, and what better than a case of Coors, eh?:D

Let's fast forward to the 1980's:
    Calhoun Surf by the Raybeats

I'll have to wait an hour to nominate Los Straitjackets!

    >>>>>>Well, I love The Challengers version, but really, the original by Phil Upchurch (I met Phil..beautiful guy) is still the best!

Actualy, now that Im thinking about it.......after 15 years of playing in Surf Bands, my pick for THE classic surf tune that has all the elements has gotta be:

    "Minor Chaos" by The Treasures.

If youve never heard this tune, its got it all, fast reverb guitar, repetitive guitar riff, crashing cymbals, and the best rim shot rolls you will ever hear!!!

Another one for my "Rare Instros " Compilation.

I don't care if it's been mentioned before:

"Pipeline" by Chantay's (as their record label ungrammatically called them)

Sounds killer in mono ... sounds great in stereo, too. I was pleasantly surprised. Dubbed this in stereo off a Time-Life LP for my ongoing "Favorite Things" series, which is up to 34 volumes of 79-plus minutes each and may never end at this rate...

    Re: YOu cant Sit Down

I agree ... but I didn't think Phil's version qualified as a surf tune ... while the Challengers version might.

A little trivia, which you probably already know Mikey, concerning Phil Upchurch's "You Can't Sit Down" ... it was the break music for Dee Clark's band of which Phil was a member ... it was recorded in New Orleans while Clark was on tour ... and Clark is supposedly one of the hand clappers.

So ... where do I get my copy of "Mikey's Rare Instros" ? ... :)

I'd use mono if I could find that on CD....uh, now since you're here, Tim, do you consider "Out Of Limits" a surf record? I do, but not everyone agrees...

I simply consider it great. (And after many years of searching, I did find a copy of the 45 that calls the song "Outer Limits.")

    Hey ED,
I know the brain meant "The Wailers" Tall Cool One...

    ...while the hand typed "Waikikis":D

Were you also thinking about "Hawaii Tattoo" at the time???
