Alex Masi - Attack of the Neon Shark. I believe Allan Holdsworth plays on this album. Alex is very influenced by him. He also studied with Shawn Lane.

Buckethead is one of those artists where you say, "Just pick up all of his albums and check them out--he only has 2,658 of them. Well, until six months from now, by which time he'll have added another 300."

Micheal Thompson kind fits with this . I have omly downloaded some of MT's songs and thought they were good . I"ve wanted to get the actual cds of his music (along with 4Gagillion other CDs I want to get ) at some point. There's so many directions you can go explore Neo classical ( Tony Mac alpine is my first pick ) Jazz (Pat Metheny is fantastic! Everyone posting here is throwing out great picks (and different direction/styles )as well! It's endless....I have a huge playlist of most this music called Guitar Instrumentals.[/QUOTE]

  6. For those who like their electric guitar instrumentals free of lead guitar noodling, there's always stuff like Mogwai or Pelican...

Has vocals, Bloodline- Since You're Gone ( Joe Bonnamassa 17yrs old) just floored me on the outro/coda part of this tune. Of course we all know what he became to guitarists later in life

My favorite living guitarist is Buck Pizzarelli. I enjoy his Green Guitar Blues and Cafe Pierre Trio albums, but he is best experienced live. He is 90 and had a stroke 9 months ago (but was back in fine playing shape when I saw him last week) so I suggest finding a way to see him sooner rather than later.

Every time I watch him play I receive a jaw dropping education in how to realize the potential of this instrument though I have been hacking away at it myself for 38 years.

Far be it for me to discourage anyone from listening to Abercrombie or Pass, but I don't think this is what the OP is after...

As a guitar player I respect technique and agility but it's always a great melodic line that makes me return to a track again and again. Sometimes simpler is better.

In that respect Santo and Johnny's "Sleepwalk" is the bulls-eye & benchmark for my personal taste.

Gary Moore's "The Loner" and Santana's "Samba Pa Ti" are also high on the list.

The Hellecasters could often pull off a nice combo of both flash and heart, though their stage shows usually leaned toward a three-way "head cutting" session.

Howabout a clean-playin' young lad from Berklee: John Tropea.

Maybe you're more familiar with him from his work with Deodato -
(this is 1973, not 2001; Airto was actually only on the flipside in the
original release of the album;) Tropea's ride starts about 3:00 in:

Sorry, meant Les Paul( just kiddin') I 'm thinking of too many guitarists as I'm typing away and got mixed up there! Thanks for pointing that out. Though I'm surprised that wasn't caught immediately, if not sooner by someone posting here? So forgive me if I post a Vinnie Beck or Jeff Moore ha ha
