It was! It was such a luxury for me to spend 40 minutes, uninterrupted, actively listening to one album; I never do that at home anymore. The ticket price was about the same as the box set will cost me, so it wasn’t cheap, but I’d gladly do it again if they play other albums in the future. There were certainly some spectacular moments when I heard gasps from the audience. Someone mentioned during the Q&A they could hear layers of the songs they hadn’t noticed before. Giles was asked how he decided where to put each part of the mix, & he answered that he had no rules and experimented to find out what worked best. There were about 3-4 questions to Giles about his mix, so watch the Facebook video if you’re interested. Another interesting quote was Andrew Farriss commenting that Giles’ new surround mix reminded him more of what he heard back in the studio rather than Bob Clearmountain’s original mix which was more like a pop album.
I got about 10 mins into the video yesterday, as far as Andrew thanking everyone, before the rest of my family came crashing through the front door and began arguing over the top of it. Plan on returning to it later, with headphones if that’s what it takes. As far as I’m concerned, Kick was always a great sounding album from the off, both on vinyl and on CD. Will be interested to hear the surround mix (True HD core in 5.1 here only alas) as an alternate listen to the original album. I’m particularly stoked with people at the Q&A hearing ‘hidden’ layers int he tracks - that was so much of the fun of the Zeppelin companion audio discs for the recent reissues, hearing the layers in Whole Lotta Love that I simply didn’t know was there. Looking forward on the box set even more now!
What is the actual release date for the CD/Blu-ray set? I keep seeing 11/24, but I've also seen 11/3, and I saw one one article claiming INXS will be first-to-market with Dolby Atmos ahead of REM's Automatic for the People, which streets 11/10.
I’ll be interested to hear how the stereo Hi Res version of the album sounds. The original CD was so good it will be hard to top it...
Does this 4 disc set include a Hi Res stereo mix? It does mention Hi Res but I'm not sure if they just mean the 5.1 version.
But also slaved to tape and mixed on an analog console, wonder if they went back to the analogue multitracks for the Blu-ray and converted them to 24/96 mono files for the surround mix? It doesn't sound like they created a new stereo mix, so your point likely stands for the stereo versions.
That would be ideal. If they did this, why aren't they saying so? That's the kind of thing they should know to put out there. I'd also assume it would have been mentioned at the listening party Q&A.
I would expect that for a high profile job like this, Giles and Andrew would have listened to the digital and analog multi tracks and come to an agreement on what sounds best.
Michael a good indication of a digital or mixed song will have a tell tale line cut at about 22 (44) Depending on later digital recordings DAT max could be 24 (48) Mystify appears to have no such cut-off
That is so weird (did I already say that? ). I wonder if the singles will reflect those same results. Didn’t you discover some Disintegration-era Cure single mixes have higher cut-offs than the LP versions? I can’t remember for sure at the moment. Thank you, by the way.
It is weird. If just going by the specs it looks like Devil Inside and Need You Tonight are the only ones with a cut-off. The Cure singles all have a 22 cut-off as well. What I found weird for Disintegration. The compact disc is cut-off at about 21 it doesn't even make it to the standard 22 (44)
