Ironic ending to the album...

I find it interesting that the final seconds of The Battle Rages On album (Deep Purple's last with guitarist Ritchie Blackmore)...has everyone doing a nice groove during the fade-out, except there's no guitar in the mix; and since Blackmore quit the band only a few months later...it's truly an ironic moment that closes the album.

Is there another ironic ending to an album?

    Surely there must be! :)

Thorn Tree in the Garden... a gentle dead-dog tearjerker at the end of the Layla guitar storm

Edit : and I guess it's also ironic since it's essentially a solo track... and all those Dominos would be solo again shortly!

Hope... but it was the end, the final song they recorded before breaking up (until they reformed many years later).

I hate to be the one to do it but...

Surely "Her Majesty" from Abbey Road?

If I'm following the intended premise of the thread...

Is that ironic? Odd, but maybe not ironic, not sure though, maybe you’re right!

Not too mention... that's one of the songs from that album that sounds more like a Love + Rockets song than a typical Bauhaus song

I'm not sure. I wouldn't really characterize the example in the OP as "ironic." But if we go by the definition (happening in the opposite way to what is expected, and typically causing wry amusement because of this) then I'd say "Her Majesty" qualifies.

Yeah, and it sounds more like Love and Rockets than Tones on Tail too, despite Tones coming before Rockets :)

That's true, I guess they weren't quite ready for L+R proper yet!

I was having trouble finding the right word. Knocked around symbolic ending, etc. Not quite sure myself.

Alice in Chains' Music Bank (1999) ends with the song 'Died', which ended up being the last track Layne Staley would record with them before dying in 2002.

    Yours is more symbolic.

If Ritchie Blackmore ended that same album with a guitar solo / no other instruments playing, then I would consider that more ironic perhaps.

In a way, thinking about it, there’s three of the post-Bauhaus scenarios there: “Who Killed Mr Moonlight” would fit like a glove on David J’s first solo album, “Slice of Life” sounds exactly like Tones on Tail in 1984, and Hope sounds exactly like early Love and Rockets :)

I could see "Her Majesty" as ironic: big, polished, well-thought-out 'statement album' that ends with a joke...

How about the end of Roxy Music’s For Your Pleasure, whose title track falls apart into a Brian Eno dominated maelstrom after Eno has repeatedly sung “ta-ra” (ie goodbye). It was his last recording with them, but according to him it was later, on the subsequent tour, when he started getting fed up and then resigned.

True, but there’s wit and jollity or black humour in other earlier places...? Maxwell, Octopus, Polythene Pam...

Ironic that "I've Had Enough" is at the end of London Town, when the traffic ending of Wings was still one album away...

Agree - it's just the juxtaposition of a thrown-off gag after the Big Message of "The End" that makes it ironic - the other songs don't puncture the potential pomposity like "Her Majesty" does...

Too bad "JLP" didn't end with "Ironic"! :)

Or is it ironic it doesn't end with "Ironic"?

I always thought the last song on
Lou reed- Berlin was a pretty ironic ending. It's called sad song but is the least depressing and most uplifting song on a dark album. Besides the lyrics Sad song sounds just like Pink Floyd!
