Certain songs from Toys in the Attic sound very much like T. Rex.
I wonder if they were a big influence on Aerosmith.

Well Johnny, you sure look different. I see you have gone through their whole catalogue and we disagree on one thing, “Rock In A Hard Place” is my favorite Aerosmith album. How you can pass up rockers like Cheshire Cat, Bolivian Ragamuffin, Jailbait and the beautiful Joanie's Butterfly is beyond me.

So where do you rank the albums now?

From best to worst, I rank the albums like this:
    1T Toys In The Attic
    1T Rocks
    3t Permanent Vacation
    3t Pump
5 Rock In A Hard Place
    6 Just Push Play
    7 Get Your Wings
    8 Aerosmith
    9 Nine Lives
    10 Music From Another Dimension
    11 Draw The Line
    12 Night In The Ruts
    13 Get A Grip
    14 Done With Mirrors

To make them stronger, Nine, Play and Dimension need some trimming down to LP length.

Like a box of candy, you're not always going to like everything you get, but the good stuff is still good. No one is forcing you to eat the ones you don't want. If you don't like the ballads don't listen to them. The great 70's Aerosmith albums were between 34 and 39 minutes long. Music From Another Dimension is over an hour long. The band has given you more than you need to make this a really good album, so the trick here is to just pare down the songs to your liking. Here are my 40 minutes:

    1. Luv XXX
    2. Oh Yeah
    3. Beautiful
    4. Out Go The Lights
    5. Legendary Child
    6. Street Jesus
    7. Lover a lot
    8. Something
    9. Closer

To fulfill your collection you ought to check out these dozen non-album tracks:

    Head First
    Deuces Are Wild
    Devil’s Got A New Disguise
    Sedona Sunrise
    Angel Eyes
    Blind Man
    Walk On The Water
    Girls Of Summer
    Lay It Down
    The Grind
    Chip Away The Stone
    Major Barbara

You can hear them all on Youtube

Permanent Vacation has some of the best deep cuts of their whole discography, as does Pump.

No, it isn't. It's an album band. 1973-1986 the best period.

I consider myself to be a pretty big Aerosmith fan. I first saw them in 1978 in Pittsburgh at the old Civic Arena. I know we all have different tastes and I really do hate to attack another fans opinion, but..........I just could never put Just Push Play, Permanent Vacation, Rock in a Hard Place and Pump ahead of Get Your Wings, Aerosmith or even Draw the Line. Drugged out Aerosmith is better than pop Aerosmith in my opinion. I do agree with Toys first. It then would be Get Your Wings, Rocks, Aerosmith and still Draw the Line for me. I am an old school Aerosmith fan. I can't say I hated their singles band comeback because I saw them during that period. I'm not trying to stir hate here. Just another man's opinion.

It is okay, I got used to people having different taste years ago.
I see 4 sets of fans:
    Bandwagon
    Casual
    True
    Hard Core

Bandwagon fans like everything that is popular by an artist, but nothing else. We could also call these fans Sheep.
Casual fans like some albums and some songs but not the catalogue or artist in general.
True fans pretty much like everything an artist makes, to a degree at least.
Hard Core fans own everything possible of an artist catalogue, t shirts, etc, and they can tell you what time Ringo took a pee and what studio he was in when he did it.

I consider myself a true fan of Aerosmith because I like most of their songs. I have no problem with the albums bandwagon fans refuse to enjoy. It is not like Aerosmith was a rock band and then started making polka records. There is not that much difference between their first album and their last. Except for too many ballads.

    The math my way:
    Rock In A Hard Place – 10 songs = 4 great, 4 really good, 1 good, 1 okay.
    Get Your Wings - 8 songs = 4 great, 3 good, 1 okay.
    Aerosmith – 8 songs = 2 great, 2 really good, 3 good, 1 okay.
    Draw The Line – 8 songs = 4 great, 1 okay, 3 lousy.

Nope, in fact Aerosmith's best stuff by far is their Deep Cuts.

I cannot agree. Pump has Monkey On My Back, F.I.N.E., Young Lust, etc. Permanent Vacation has Hangman Jury, Heart's Done Time, Magic Touch etc. These are great songs, not on comps.

By no means a singles band. Especially their later albums.
They are one of the few rock era bands who kept on after rock was gone and made some great albums.
Toys in the Attic is their best 70s album, much of their later stuff is like Toys.
Joe Perry and Brad Whitford never seem to run out of ideas for great guitar hooks and riffs.

So you are willing to say an album without either of their guitar players is better than the other three? So you are saying their are 8 great or really good on RIAHP? And on the other three 12 really good or great? C'mon? Seriously?
Look, I will just name 8 on those and you tell me the 8 that are better OK?
Mama Kin, Dream On, Train Kept a Rollin, Seasons of Wither, Milk Cow Blues, Sight for Sore Eyes, Lord of The Thighs, Same Old Song and Dance
Honarable Mention - SOS, Draw the Line, Walkin the Dog and Kings and Queens.

Really? I don't hear any resemblance. Which songs? Most T Rex was folk leaning, the stuff that leaned toward rock was a bit poppy.

For the 70s-era, I have to say they are an albums band. 2 reasons: 1) My favorite Aerosmith song is an album cut from Toys (No More No More), and 2) many of their 70s "hits" were chopped up to bits as singles! :(

Although there are a few album tracks I like from the 80s and beyond, I'd probably do ok with a compilation of the later years.

Get the 70s albums starting with "Toys In The Attic" and "Rocks". After that get "Get Your Wings" and "Draw The Line". Finally get "Aerosmith" and "Night In The Ruts".

My ratings for the 70s albums in chronological order.

    Aerosmith - 7
    Get Your Wings - 8
Toys In The Attic - 10
    Rocks - 10
    Draw The Line - 7.5
Night In The Ruts - 6.5

I never cared for much after that.

That's fine, of course. :) I know people who like Heart 2.0 for the same reasons, and have no interest in their 70's output. OK, I know a person. :)

For CDs I like Box of Fire which has all the albums up until the comeback. I think they are more than a singles band. They are classic 70s album oriented hard rock

I also enjoy the original records and can't image not having all the first ones at least to Night in the Ruts

I have the first cd box set for the bonus tracks

This looks right to me. I lost interest after night in the ruts came out. I really like "kings and Queens"'from the less popular Draw the Line album
