what a difficult listen...about an abandoned little girl, "no more than 6 or 7", and her dog, the girl's mother had fled, her dad was off somewhere, drunk, she and the dog show up at Dolly's house, hoping Dolly will take them in...Dolly sings in a little girl voice, that is eerie, Dolly takes them into her home, but the girl and the dog die that same night....Dolly sings about their passing in an almost nostalgic way, no tears or pain...I'm not convinced Dolly herself didn't feed them poison to get rid of them

Her early albums had at least one Dead Baby song which makes this one easy to listen to.

Don't see anything wrong with it. No worse than "Little Sister" or "Go Away Little Girl" or a multitude of others involving younger girls (hey, what about the Critters?)...

I hope the "Hey Daddy" chorus is not directed at the singer.... otherwise its creepy --- or "daddy" meant something different back then...

I am as sentimental as anyone when listening to music, but this one is so far "over the top" it doesn't even affect me.

The first song I heard that made me think this was Young Girl by Gary Puckett And The Union Gap.

  14. I hope it's about his younger girlfriend and not his daughter. ick

Some guys like to be called daddy. Maybe it's a rockabilly thing. :D

Watched the Dolly video and it seemed more sad than creepy at first...then the ending.

I always thought "We've Only Just Begun" by the Carpenters is creepy as well as "Somethin' Stupid'" by Frank and Nancy Sinatra.

Helen Reddy's Angie Baby always creeped me out.

  17. Neither "Me and Little Andy" nor "Jeannie's Afraid of the Dark" are as disturbing to me as Porter and Dolly's "Malena" which is essentially a child's death wish fulfilled.

The most disturbing song I've ever heard is The Pernice Brothers' "Chicken Wire"

  18. This one becomes quite funny when you do a gender switcheroo on it: "Young boy, get out of my mind..."

Dolly's got a LOT more depth than most of you might think. An amazing under-rated songwriter, at least in the rock community. I'd love to see a punk band could do an Dolly covers album- could be amazing.

Suicide's Frankie Teardrop is a bit disturbing.

Yes, and then there will be an RCA Legacy CD of the Essential Porter & Dolly Dead Baby songs. And mastered by Darcy Proper at that.

I dunno, Dolly's "Gypsy, Joe and Me" would have this beat. Dead pet, dead lover and implied suicide all in a cheery sounding song . . .
