Is it me, or is the new Cheap Trick album recorded/mastered very badly??

Though I think it's a great album, I think Cheap Trick's "Special One" is recorded very poorly. Either that or mastered poorly. It doesn't sparkle, it's flat sounding, bass heavy, with a tendency toward the murky and muddy. Now it doesn't sound awful or anything, but I am shocked that a band with unlimited financial resources could release something so lack-lustre in terms of sonic quality. I guess this happens all the time, though. What do you think?

I've not heard it but.... who mastered it? Robin Zander's kid?

What makes you think they have unlimited financial resources? They never sold serious numbers except for "Budukan" and"the Flame" and that was almost 20 years ago. They are a great band and I am a huge fan but they would play your birthday party if you paid them.

Wouldn't the record company pay for that?

Are you kidding? Those guys are FILTHY rich. Dude, we're talking about Cheap Trick, not MC Hammer. The album was mastered by Howie Weinberg at Masterdisk. I don't know why it sounds so bad to me. Maybe it's that I'm not used to listening to modern recordings or something.

No, they don't sell out like they used to. A wonderful band with great roots and attitude. The Cheap Trick name is NOT a huge money machine anymore, Prix.

Really? That's a real shock. I guess I truly am stuck in the '70s. I would think those guys could still fill a stadium. Sckott, have you heard their new album? It's pretty friggin' good, I must say.

Nope. Their songwriting has never gone stale from my experience. They make a great sugary rock and roll song and also some very brilliant pop.

I'm sure it's great. :) I almost got to meet them once. They make a great interview!

I'm not picking on them. But, they were never a headlining stadium act. Budukan was a fluke that was not followed up by a successful seller for over TEN years . As far as $, don't forget they didn't write their two big 80's hits. And i'm sure they did ok but not what people think. Its like that illusion people have the David Bowie sold a ton of records and he never did.

WHAT??! Brother, what are you talking about? "Let's Dance" alone was number 2 for seven weeks! If that's not selling albums, I don't know what is. Are you going to tell me that Bowie would play my birthday party for $1500? If so, draw me up a contract!:D

Holy washed up rock 'n' rollers, Dynaman!!!! You're right! I just checked their tour dates and those guys are doing Casinos and County Fairs. How sad.

We have a venue out here merely crawling distance from my house. If Cheap Trick played there, they would need 2 other bands on the bill to make the till (Profit at the box).

In fact, I'm sure that happened. Something like Eddie Money and Loverboy.

Heck, I saw Loverboy at the local fair here and they did a GREAT show.

When you love what you do, you keep doing it. These guys have family and wives and they do the trips to dives in a stinky bus. Hold on and swallow the drammamine, cuz they're looking to see us in Possum Ridge, Arkansas!

    Cheap Trick at the movies

Hey, let's not forget Cheap Trick's recent cameo appearance in Eddie Murphy's last movie, "DADDY DAYCARE". They played "Surrender" at a neighborhood fundraiser (in the movie). My 4 year old loves the movie-about all I can say about it is that whoever scored it loves '70's rock and used it to a better effect than I would have expected.

Well I hate to break it to you but ,to date ,Bowie only has THREE platinum LPs. Lets Dance ,Tonight and Changesonbowie. And He doesn't even have that many Gold Lp's which are based on a million dollars of sales. Platinum is units... Check the RIAA site.
Its pretty interesting to see how many artists are paper tigers sales-wise.

I saw Cheap Trick at the Somerville Theatre a short time ago. This is a very small old movie theatre. They only played about 70 minutes, and came across as not very happy to be playing such a small venue. This long time fan was very disappointed.

Once again I am a huge fan and have all their records but the joke in Spinal tap about "today: puppet show and Spinal Tap" was pretty prescient as far as CT are concerned.

I don't think I've ever heard a Cheap Trick song. What was one of their hits?

Fancy Bowie and Cheap Trick in the same thread - this can't be real.

    Regards,
    Geoff

I'm glad they - or the record company - went with a professional!

Maybe you've been listening to too much vinyl lately, Prix? It can spoil you, ya know! ;)

Hmmmm.......I guess me and the 20,000 people that saw them at Maple Leaf Gardens would disagree with you.

and as far as your Bowie statement....how did Bowie get so wealthy? Smelt trapping??? He has sold TONS of records. Most of them probably before you were even born.
