Is John whistling the coda of Hello, Goodbye at the end of Two of Us?

I was driving to work this morning, no music playing and out of nowhere it dawned on me that the whistling at the end of I Dig A Pony is very similar to the coda in Hello, Goodbye. As many times as I’ve heard both songs I can’t believe I haven’t noticed this. Am I the last person to realize this?

I think you mean "Two of Us"

    But either way, no.

I know you're not the first person to notice the whistling :)

The similarities are there, but I never noticed that until you mentioned it. You've a good point.

There is a strong similarity in the melodies, I think, now that you mention it.

I always assumed he was referencing 'Hello Goodbye' but don't know for sure if he was :)

Don't hear much similarity if you mean Two Of Us. Is there whistling on Pony?

Correct and correct. But there is a similarity in the whistling melody..maybe John unconsciously digged it up from the HG coda melody and revised it a bit.

Two of Us is what I meant. Maybe a gort could correct this?

I hear it always as a quote from Howlin' Wolf's "Killing floor", especially the ending of "The two of us".

Don't think so. May be the same notes, but not the right rhythm.

I hope this doesn't turn into a "Who sang the ahhas on A Day In The Life" ... for those of you who experienced that thread.

Is it actually John whistling? I always heard Paul's voice doing the whistles. What did Geoff Emerick have to say? I know he says he remembered John whistling; still, he's been wrong on occasion. Maybe it's John at the beginning of it, and Paul takes over halfway through? You're wrong, it's Paul! I've heard every Beatles song known to man and I KNOW I'M RIGHT!!!

Ya know...it never occurred to me, but yeah...it sounds like the coda to Hello Goodbye. That's how I will hear it from now on.

Ignore the snark from other posters. That was a great observation and it doesn't have to be the exact melody-it's close enough plus we know John is very clever with his ad-libs and I would never put it past him to use "Hello Goodbye" as a "Two of Us" send-off. Just another time John Lennon was so smart that it takes time for us relative neanderthals to catch up to his intelligence. I may never have realized if you didn't mention it.

    Great observation! :edthumbs:

    Yes, it's more of a variation-on-the-theme-of-the-coda-of-Hello-Goddbye.

The "Two of Us"/"Hello Goodbye" connection existed at least a week before the finished version was recorded.
