Good point, that would have been a better thread title.

I also agree with the poster who stated that this should be seen in a theatre - I saw this film a few times upon release and it was absolutely beautiful on the big screen. The constant howling wind and relentless snow were beautifully portrayed. Loved the ending, too.

  2. I like the actors and Altman has made some classics, but this movie does little for me outside of the Leonard Cohen soundtrack. Years ago I had to write an essay on it for a film appreciation class in college.

I like it very much but it's far from my favorite film. It's close to my favorite Altman film, however.

Not my all-time favorite, but probably among my top-20 (I was going to start a new thread, but decided against it):). Is there any particular reason why this hasn't been released on BD? Is it a music-rights issue?

Probably mine too. But McCabe is right up there. I think the nature of the story and the somewhat challenging location filming meant Altman couldn't screw around too much. My sense is that from prefogging the film (for that opium haze look) to the somewhat careful plotting, Altman was willing to take a more conventional approach. And it worked beautifully. A haunting opium pipe dream of a movie.

One of my favorite Altman films along with 3 Women and Images. Haunting atmosphere and great natural performances from the actors. Cohen's songs work perfectly, and the cinematography is brilliant. I have to be in a certain mood to watch it, usually a rainy day, but it always draws me in to its atmosphere.
