They're the only band I can think of carrying on the hair metal torch, and their songs are genuinely catchy to boot. They put on a hell of a live show as well. I used to go see them all the time at the Key Club on Sunset, right after they had changed their name to Steel Panther.

I infinitely prefer them, even knowing it's a parody, to all the growl metal out there.

Man I'd love to see them live.

They're the funniest anyway. They opened for Judas Priest in fall 2014 and the song titles had me cracking up the entire show!

Tune in to Eddie Trunk to hear him cry about Steel Panther desecrating his music. :)

Indeed...it was the song titles only that made me chuckle. I'll pass on the lyrics.

You must not be keeping up because there is a HUGE resurgence of hair metal bands...Santa Cruz, Crashdiet, HEAT, Hardcore Superstar, etc...and a slew of Swedish bands. Steel Panther is merely a parody band that should focus on more "serious" songs.

HEAT have definitely put out some great 80s sounding rock in the vein of Bon Jovi. Catchy tunes

I like the band Eclipse. @Holy Diver, do you like this? Good riffs and solo.

The lead singer used to be in a Van Halen cover band and he does an awesome David Lee Roth. He even does a DLR yelp in that Asian Hooker song up top.

To answer the original question, though... they're too hair metal for me to take seriously. Cheeseville.

If you're taking them seriously, you're missing the point.

He's the only person I've ever heard that can do a convincing Roth. It's crazy how perfectly he nails Light Up the Sky in this video.

Isn't Dragonforce considered a parody band? If so they don't own that lane either.

I look at them and hear one verse from one song and I'm done. Maybe there's more there than meets the eye but I'm out. Their look is my era of growing up and I can totally make fun of it's excesses and ridiculousness, but there are still good songs that came out of there that aren't stupid.

Judas Priest taking them out on tour was more ludicrous than the worst hair metal song!

If it's deeper than I get, fine, enjoy what you enjoy and don't listen to me. :)

I think this is precisely the problem with many artists and fans. Zappa asked "does humour belong in music?", but many thought he only meant overtly. Taking yourself too seriously is why so many bands AND their fans have no depth.

    Steel Panther are fantastic BTW.

They definitely sound like a parody band, whether it's on purpose or not I'm not sure.

As for the original question of this thread? HELL NO. It's a comedy act with guitars. *admission: I never liked the pop metal stuff in the 80s in the first place, I was firmly in the underground metal and thrash camp, so there is 0% nostalgia for what Steel Panther is doing.
