From the 3 HDCD's that I have (that I know of) only the Independence Day soundtrack uses Peak Extension, Star Wars Revenge Of The Sith and Roxette's Hits! don't use any filter, so both should sound the same decoded or undecoded. The Independence Day soundtrack always sounded great tome, since I bought it on release day in July 1996. I can listen toit decoded playing the CD on my Oppo BDP-93, and it sounds outstanding (it was tracked to analog andmixed down to 24 bit digital), while undecoded sounds good but a bit compressed.

You can also display this during playback.

    In foobar, go to
File -> Preferences -> Display -> Default User Interface -> Playback state display formatting -> Status bar
    and use something like this:

    %codec% | [%__bitspersample% bits] | %samplerate% Hz | %bitrate% kbps | %channels% | %playback_time%[ / %length%] | HDCD = %__hdcd% $if(%__hdcd%,'['PE: %__hdcd_peak_extend% | LLE: %__hdcd_gain% | TF: %__hdcd_transient_filter%']')

    Here's a slightly improved version:

    %codec% | [%__bitspersample% bits] | %samplerate% Hz | %bitrate% kbps | %channels% | %playback_time%[ / %length%] | HDCD: $if(%__hdcd%,'yes ['Peak Extend: %__hdcd_peak_extend% | Low-Level Extension: %__hdcd_gain% | Transient Filter: %__hdcd_transient_filter%']',no)
