THEY'RE HERE AND I've listened to them at least 3 times each.

Analogue Productions 45 RPM 12 inch singles
Isaac Hayes: Hits From Shaft. APP 88002-45
The Staple Singers: Respect Yourself b/w I'll Take You There. APP 4116-45

ALL I can say is that you have never heard this music with as much POWER as these versions. Absolute solid sound from top to bottom (specially bottom). There is much more "there" than ever before.
I'm speechless. You just have to hear them for yourselves.

    What? No turntable? Oh well.

BTW, FOUR more Jazz Fantasy APP arrived in the same box. That makes 18 out 25 OR only seven more to go on this wave. There's always next year.

    Impressions day two: comparisons.

    Isaac Hayes Theme from Shaft.
Compared to an "Enterprise" black label 33 RPM pressing, the 45 RPM Theme From Shaft is an absolute revelation. I'm even MORE speechless than yesterday.
HOWEVER....side two of the 45 RPM contains "Do Your Thing"....a 19:38 Jam that takes up almost all side of a 33 RPM. Obviously at 45 RPM Kevin and Steve had to look deep into their special bag of tricks to make some miracles. It's not bad sounding by ANY means but it does lack the magic from the "other" side.

The Staples 45 IS JUST AMAZING. No comparisons needed. My copy seemed a bit quieter than the Shaft (straight out of the box). $10 a song and worth it.

    Steve,
Would you be willing to enlighten us as to why you and Kevin decided to cut such a long side at 45 rpm? How did you know that 19+ minutes would sound better at 45 rpm than at thirty three and one third rpm? Did it just seem "wrong" to issue a 12 inch record with one side at 45 and the other at thirty three and one third?

You can definitely cut a 12" at 45 and still cut a decent side with 23 minutes.....

So how come I've read that at 33 1/3 the optimum side length is 18 minutes or less?

Couldn't the grooves have been cut wider (louder) at 33 1/3 than at 45?

Maybe the Tonmeister can enlighten us?

Obviously this question is addressed to Steve and only he can answer.

My one cent.... CEO Chad Kassem (love you Chad) chooses them....Kevin and Steve master and cut. RTI presses them. I'm sure Steve would not put his name on anything unless he and his client were satisfied with the results.

My kid is a night owl, so I'm lucky that way. But these 45s are like potato chips or Doritos, You can't listen to them just once. I definitely went back in time to when all I had was a bunch 45 that I played over and over.
    Ah.... the good old days.

I have not heard them yet; just my test lacquers.

I'm glad they turned out well.

That "Shaft" stuff was a bitch to cut. Side two (the long thing) was just cut at a lower level, but nothing sonically was done to it; that's the sound of the tape.

I worked the longest on those Staple Singers songs; trying to get the most out of those old Stax tapes....

    Steve,
Wouldn't it have been easier to cut the long side at 33 1/3?

Make you change speeds for each side of the records? Nah...

I would have just picked a shorter song, but no one asked me.

Which Isaac Hayes song would you have picked?

    I can hear it.
If you've gotten more out of them, the master tapes would be blank.
    ;)
