Its a major inconvenience to convert all my FLAC files to Apple Lossless. 807GB of FLAC to be precise!

If car audio systems routinely supported FLAC, I wouldn't care.

No - I have no interest in FLAC or ALAC. Storage is not an issue any longer so why introduce any sort of compression. I rip to AIFF.

What's the point of FLAC when most of the stuff there is brick walled and dynamically compressed remasters?

I really like how almost none of these posts actually answers the question.

How about Apple full support across all its devices for 96/24+ resolution? I wonder why they do nothing about it for so long.

Because it only interests a small niche of consumers.

Because it isn't all brick walled and compressed. People will create needledrops if the that's what it takes to get a good FLAC file.

I though flac was coming with the next update. Isn't the iPhone x supposed to be able to play flac? Was sure I heard it announced somewhere.

edit: iPhone X & 8 support FLAC playback, iOS 11 brings it to iPhone 7

I don't own iPhones because they're a ripoff but I assume if the hardware of the phone can play it then iTunes has to as well since they have that stupid thing where you can't even use the phone with synching all that crap.

Yup you heard it right. But at the same time it seems like it dropped support for WAV and AIFF. What are they thinking... FLAC is not as good as those two!

I followed the instructions to play FLAC on the latest iPhone 8 Plus but it doesn't work. Dropped a Flac file in a cloud drive, opened it up and then nothing. I never really used my iPhone for Hi-Res playback anyways.

Yes. FLAC is a common format now (and has been for a while) That any basic audio playing software should support.

Can anyone confirm there's no support for WAV and AIFF? All my tunes are WAV files.

Yes. It should have happened years ago. Knowing Apple, they will launch this as a new ‘feature’ in the future.

IMHO - no. iTunes isn't as much music management software as it is Apple device managment software for music. I'd also think that if they built in FLAC capablity to iTunes they'd want to / have to start selling music in FLAC format to combat market errosion of folks using iTunes that would buy FLAC files versus the format of music file they already sell. Overall, they'd add complexity and cost to their business model with little additional return and increased incrimental risk.

I say let iTunes do what it was originally designed to do and let all others (JRiver, Foobar etc.) play in the FLAC market

The question is why would anyone want to use iTunes in the first place.

It would be nice to be able to put flac rips on my iPhone.

I would be happy if they would atleast sell lossless music whether it be flac or alac. Amazon needs to get on this as well. Lossy downloads are no longer needed these days with the increases in storage space on most devices.

Flac is so common, Apple needs to support.

My understanding is that they haven't dropped support for WAV or AIFF. They have a catch all description within iOS 11 called "Linear PCM" which includes both formats. I've not had any issues with using them to date. FLAC is supported in the new Files app which may be extended for inclusion in iTunes after a later update - no confirmation of that though at this stage and that part is pure speculation.

Given that the new iPhones are allegedly supporting FLAC, this should technically be the time for iTunes to start supporting it as well.
