Funny, I thought it was "Let's Get Drunk and Screw", Jimmy Buffett. Maybe TGIF could repurpose that hit.

Even after Neil Young did "This Notes For You", he admitted that his non commercial standard was only for rich rock stars who didn't need more money. He could totally understand some one hit wonder selling their song for some much needed money. While they had a vanity label and a decent run of albums, The Youngbloods never had many hits and Jessie's been out of the big time for a long time.

At least KFC will change their ad to another song in due time unlike Bob Seger's "Like A Rock" that was used for over a decade.

For me, it was over with that awful cover of the Beach Boys "Good Vibrations" being used for a Sunkist commercial.

Ok, slightly OT, please forgive me:
    Tonight's NBC nightly news ads:
    1. Tylenol (pain reliever)
    2. Prudential (retirement planning)
    3. Linzess (for irritable bowels!)
    4. Rite-aid (drug store)
    5. USAA (auto insurance)
    6. Alka-seltzer (cold med)
    7. Aleve (pain reliever)
    8. Edward Jones (financial advice)
    9. AARP (Medicare supplement)
    10. Tums (heartburn)
    11. Crestor (cholesterol control)
    12. Xeljanz (arthritis)
Flipping channels to the (simultaneous) ABC national news, I caught:
    1. Axa (retirement planning)
    2. Alka-seltzer (same ad as on NBC)
    3. Xeljanz (same as NBC)
    4. Botox (not for plastic surgery, but some other use (?))
    5. Centrum (vitamins)
    6. Rite-aid (same as NBC)
    7. Lyrica (diabetic pain medicine)
    8. Rite-aid (again!!)
    9. Aleve (same as NBC)
    10. Symbicort (asthma)
    11. Prudential (same as NBC)
    12. Salonpas (pain relief)
I won't sidetrack things further - just figured I should follow up on my threat above!
    ;)

This is a very interesting topic. There is no doubt what the demographic for a network 5:30r 6:30 news broadcast is..

Reminds me of the Col. Sanders, Country Joe & The Fish Story. It seems they they were on the same plane enroute to somewhere. One of the Fish goes up to the Col. And says, "Do you like Hippies?" To which the Col. Replys, "Well they like my chicken, Don't they?.

I was a child of the sixties, my kids children of the 90's and they know and care very little about hippies. So if they happen to see and hear the commercial and want to track down the song, then I'm all for the commercial. As for me the song takes me back to High School.

If KFC used "Helter Skelter" as their advertising theme song
One would think there'd be a few more hippie-era songs being deployed what with all those drugs being pushed.

I'll be boycotting it because I hate animal cruelty and hippies.

    Well...hippies aren't so bad.

who sings that awful song "I was born free..." which they keep beating into my brain in the commercial? It sounds like Seger but I don't think it is..its like a Seger copy or something

You want chicken and music in ads? I like this one. Not a hippy anthem, but a favorite song of mine.

Jesse Colin Young owns a coffee plantation in Hawaii. He didn't write the song anyway.

I actually know someone who does this. Not to KFC, but to onion rings. And, yes, of course he's extremely overweight.

Reminds me of that Simpsons episode where Homer goes to San Francisco with a bunch of hippies in search of the Krusty Burger Rib-wich.

There's a commercial currently playing here - IIRC it's a PSA with Bon Jovi singing "We weren't born to follow".

Nope, it was Chet Powers aka Dino Valenti of Quicksilver Messenger Service fame. Oddly, I've never heard that they tackled the song.

I know that, but it was still a beloved 60s counterculture song co-opted for product sales, wasn't it? And it outraged a lot of people, didn't it?

I didn't specify that the Beatles themselves were behind it...

Man, you live in Canada - that's barely a country! You don't have a real government office - it's just a bunch of elves workin' out of a tree!
