I won't argue. I'll just point out that Leo won his Oscar last February, whereas whatever Oscars Arrival wins will come February 2017.

The Witch and Creed were the only two I liked this year. I can be really picky.

Best would be Captain America - Civil War.

    Deadpool would be close second.

"Revenant" opened wide in January but was still a 2015 film for awards purposes, as it got a limited release in 12/15.

I default to "US awards timelines" when I pick my favorites from a particular year. I get why people would view "Revenant" as a 2016 movie, but it did officially come out in 2015, so that's the date I'd attach to it...

"Creed" went wide in November 2015 - I'll give people "Revenant" as a 2016 film but not "Creed"! ;)

Those are my two favorites of the ones I've caught so far, although La La Land and several others haven't come anywhere near my little town yet.

    I'd reverse the order, but...

    Shalom, y'all!

10 Cloverfield is my favorite. I also liked The Nice Guys, even though it's pretty contrived.

I've seen The Witch and Revenant and consider them one time movies that I would not revisit. Finding Dory is pretty entertaining, but that is a given. I've yet to see Hell Or High Water and it's on my list. So is 31.

    "31" is ding-dang-dilledly awful.

I guess if you really dig Rob Zombie's style you might like it, but it's incoherent and pointless - which does seem to be Rob Zombie's style! :shh:

I'm sure it is. I noted it because not too many, from this year are on my list.

A really weird case is The Witch, which premiered at the Sundance Festival in January 2015 but didn't get a regular U.S. release (and perhaps anywhere else) until early this year. So depending on where you look it's either a 2015 release (IMDb, Wikipedia) or 2016 (Rotten Tomatoes).

It isn't that you are "really picky" though, is it?

I haven't screened enough of the 2016 releases yet. No theaters for me aside from my own.

Was Fences "top 10 worthy"? Filmed in Pittsburgh!

I don't know. Everyone I know seems to think so. Most of the time I am unhappy with the movies I see.

Well, then I guess The Witch is the only one I liked.

I tend to go with the UK release date simply because it's the first time I get the opportunity to see them, but I take your point. The Handmaiden, which was cited in the opening post, had a release date of October 2016 in the US, but is not released in the UK until February 2017. Therefore, I would have to regard it as a 2017 film for end of year list purposes.

Stranger Things was way better than any movie I saw this year. Maybe 2016 will kill movies too?

I think the date when the movie hits regular commercial theaters - even if limited to some in LA/NY - should be the "release date". I don't think festivals should count - but that's just me! :)

Of the few films I saw, "Café Society" and "The Light Between The Oceans" were most memorable to me.
