Just listened to Music For Lovers Only. One word- WOW. I was not expecting anything this good. I loved how the distant Bobby Hackett's sound made for a very melancholy mood. I rank this one right with sinatra's concept albums. I might dive into more of Jackie's 50's Capitol recordings with Hackett, any recommendations? Also, was melancholy seranade ever released on a proper album not a comp?

I don't know, all I have is a scratchy old 50's Capitol LP. Love this album though. That, and:

I second the recommendation for Velvet brass. The album is unique in that the sax section is replaced by mellow-sounding horns (French horns). It was remastered by Steve Hoffman, so the sound quality is excellent.

I'm curious, as I have a few but not that many of his records, but didn't Gleason on some LP's have harpsichord playing?

Same model on both covers? Probably from the same photo shoot?

Was that the 1963/4ish season from Florida? He looked like the hardest working man in TV on that series.

No - 1963-64 was the last season Gleason worked out of then-CBS Studio 50 in New York. The method of production in that season (pre-taped bits shot 2 or so days in advance of "audience night"), from what I can tell, seemed to be emulated from 1964 onwards in Britain by Benny Hill (although Gleason, unlike Hill, never did location shooting on film). And after he moved to Florida in '64, his show was never the same. But as for that model . . .

. . . I was wondering the same thing. However, it also looks like one of the photos was "flipped" (reversed), based on the shape of her eyebrows on each of those LP covers.

You're right. I love the arrangements that Gleason did for the strings on that album. :D

Not that 1952-3 recording, certainly . . . and on The Best Of Jackie Gleason, the version of "Melancholy Serenade" used was the completely different-sounding 1960 version from "proper album" Opiate D'Amour.

Thanks. Not sure which version it is though. I did two, the original (recorded at Columbia in NYC and the stereo version with a different arrangement..)

Steve, your VELVET BRASS CD has the 1952 mono version of MELANCHOLY SERENADE.
