Wish I'd known about it then. I had these things bagged and boarded. Got rid of my Playboys for a few bucks, too. All I've got left to get rid of is several years of Dragon.

Yes, the "great" era of Rolling Stone ended before they moved to the East coast. But naysayers be damned, there have still been some excellent long form pieces over the years--even recent years.

There's also been utter crap, like the indefensible non-fact-checked UVA story that got them in trouble recently. In terms of political coverage, they've never recovered from the loss of Hunter Thompson and William Greider. (Matt Taibbi? Give me a break...) And music criticism, which in the good old days took up a significant portion of the back of the magazine, is now limited to fawning over a handful of pop titles.

Britain's Q magazine was modelled on Rolling Stone, minus the politics. The extraordinary achievement of Q was to be irritating in a very British way, the way RS was irritating in a uniquely American way.

I've mentioned this before, but I once saw Wenner in the GA pit at a Giants Stadium Springsteen concert. I thought about chatting with him but decided not to do so - I didn't want to seem pushy.

He didn't come across as stand-offish or the like, though - I got the vibe that he probably would've been fine if someone approached him for a civil chat.

I'll always semi-regret not chatting with Wenner, if just because I would've asked him about some Rock Hall "controversies" and I would've loved to hear his responses!

Yeah, because "classic years" "Rolling Stone" would never use a naked pop star to sell magazines!

Both covers were calculation personified - decade notwithstanding.

The line in the sand with RS is the issue with Alicia Silverstone on the cover.

Rancid, Urge Ovekill, Radiohead, Monster Magnet. Looks like a good issue.

I didn't say anything about "classic years" Rolling Stone.

Not to mention Clueless, still a hilarious movie.

They turned into salesman around this time. You'd only read about someone when they were pushing an album or a movie. They became part of the machine.

Completely missing the Nirvana boat hurt them the most.

You can’t go home again... our generation’s Hugh Hefner, with rock stars instead of naked girls... that we preferred the rock stars tells you ...something.

“Tawdry” details aside, history will treat him as an essential element of the second half of the century. He chose to fade away, instead of burning out, but it doesn’t lessen his achievement.

Well of course it was, just like the first issue of RS.
But I mean what issue of RS, or any magazine for that matter, is the cover not calculated?

If anything it's brilliant as it draws fans/readers as well as critics thus generating publicity (for the mag and the subject) that leads to sales.
That David Cassidy cover was a big deal and I think the interview was also fairly controversial, as Cassidy was trying to distance himself from the
TV show, and be seen more as a serious musician. So yeah, it's all calculated from Lennon to Cassidy to Cobain in his corporate magazines still suck
t-shirt. At least that's how I see it.

I had no interest in reading this. I didn't even know about it to be honest. And now I just requested it from my library when it's available. :)
