Obi's all the way. I like them complete as they were originally released.

If you really need to you can quite easily re-create an obi with a decent enough scan of one and the right paper. Of course if selling on you should be totally honest about the obi being a reproduction.

I came across a whole bunch of Japanese Oasis CDs with obis in a charity shop. I did think about buying them, but decided against it. The worse ones are the sticky ones. They creak when you open the case.

I know where you are coming from. I was fortunate to get the disc below for a good price (less than $15).

I bought some other Japanese CDs with a good discount at the same time, although lacking their boxed obis.

When I first encountered the OBI strips, I thought that they were akin to the paper strips that ran around toilet paper seats in hotels that's state "This seat sanitized for your protection." Of course, that didn't help with the paper cuts. But like with those toilet seat strips, I'd tear the OBIs off. Only to discovered that the OBI is important for collectors.

The very first Japanese CD I bought was John Fogerty's S/T album, and I made the mistake of throwing the OBI strip out. Every time I pull that CD out I shake my head and ask myself why. ;)

Not the same Obi as mine, the one I bought had a promo for Eight Days A Week movie on the obi.

I'm another one who likes seeing an obi on an LP or CD and will pay a little extra for it but not a whole lot. In some cases, it's nostalgia. For example, I remember back in the day there were sellers who only stocked Japanese CDs, and it was the obi strips on them that made it obvious that these discs came from Japan. Additionally, there was the thought that Japanese CDs were better, either because they had better mastering or often offered titles that weren't considered for release in the States. So now I kinda like collecting Japanese CDs with obis. It reminds me of those guys at the record shows I'd get all excited about when I saw the obi-laden CDs at their table.

When I started buying CDs again after many years I threw a couple of them away. I even threw away a slip case for an AF gold CD.

That would kill me. I did the same, luckily just for regular discs. I was just in such a hurry to get to the music, then a little later I'd think "shouldn't I have kept that sleeve/strip?" Luckily this forum has taught me well, I even keep the stickers now. :D

Luckily I called AF and got a replacement slip case just like it. I lucked out. They even shipped it to me for free. Great people.

I spent a couple years replacing the OBIs I’d stupidly thrown out my first couple years buying Japanese CDs. Had to find and repurchase about 40 or 50 original CDs to achieve my goal, always making sure I was buying the right version of each respective disc, which took a bit of detective work. All set now.

Ah, to be an obsessive music lover.

I didn't know what an obi was until a couple of years ago. I bought a copy of Bowie's "Lodger" at Ameoba Hollywood. It had a sticker saying "missing obi" - so I asked and they told me what it was.

What's the best way to keep the obi? Its kind awkward to keep it on the outside of the case.

    all the best,
    ~dm

Depends on the type of obi and the type of release. For CDs: Sticky obis are stuck to the case. Boxed obis slide on the outside of the case. I tuck the modern wraparound obis inside the tabs holding the booklet.

Depends on what Obi. Sticky Obi's stay on the outside where it belongs. Paper glued if still holding stays where it is. If the glue had dried and it is loose if it's too long to fit inside the jewel case it stays on the outside. If it will fit inside the jewel case without compromise I'll put it there for safe keeping. All CD's are placed inside plastic jewel case bags.

I keep my obi where they came brand new. On the outside of the case in resealable plastic bags. Just like if they were still sealed. For AF slip covers and CDs I put the whole thing in a resealable bag.
