I think some of the music journalism is very very good, with a good number of articles focusing on jazz artists both past and present. I'm not one of those "all RVG's suck" folks. Sometimes I wonder if some people have never sat in the front row of a small jazz club and had their ears pinned back by a trumpet, or heard what a 20" crash/ride really sounds like when it's zealously struck by a drummer taken over by the moment. Better available? Sure,but....

Absolutely. I've had a few McMasters back then. Muddy as a duck puddle I believe is the term. Sixth Sense was one of them. So the RVG came as a revelation to me.

Funny, I see that in the very same issue they profile Todd Garfinkle and his MA Recordings. Now, THAT's some good sounding chit! I've sung their praises many times here.

Check them out, Jazz, Classical, Balkan, Early Music etc. Their recording aesthetic is top notch.

This article was published in the Oct '96 issue and this guy made some of the best sounding CD's I've ever heard. His label went belly up, of course. But I think we can all learn a lot from him and Garfinkle.

I apologize to all for the bad quality pics, I don't have a scanner and used my camera instead.

I remember PopeMusic, as well as Water Lily Acoustics and the like. Met many of these guys over the years doing Audio shows. Lindberg Lyd at 2L is carrying the flame, the BD-A I posted earlier. Their Trondheim Solistene recordings are fantastic.

BTW, that Earthworks QTC40 I mentioned earlier? It's an Omni.:)

I played some Herbie Mann today, a live date with Sonny Sharrock , Miroslav Vitous, Roy Ayers, etc. Fun to hear a guitar freakout in the middle of some mainstream kind of music.

Buck Jumpin' is named for Al Casey's famous 1941 solo composition recorded with Fats Waller, his employer of many years. Following that tenure, Casey had remained active in music, but was seldom used on recording dates. Finally he had a first album of his own in 1960.

"I was both scared and excited," said Casey. "I wanted it to be a relaxed album, and I wanted it to be good, especially because I hope to show people I wasn't dead."

Casey was, if anything, even more a master of the unamplified acoustic guitar in 1960 than when he served with Fats Waller and His Rhythm. Highly recommended!
    • Al Casey - guitar
    • Rudy Powell - alto sax and clarinet
    • Herman Foster - piano
    • Jimmy Lewis - bass
    • Belton Evans - drums
    Recorded March 7, 1960

Just received this from one of those shady Hoffman Forum retailers. :p Recorded in the same studio as the Braxton New Haven Trios that just came out. Sounds fantastic.
