  3. That was the first Sun Ra I bought too, back in '88. Left a very positive impression on me. I'm not a Sun Ra obsessive by any means but the stuff I have I really dig. Those OTT NME reviews from Gill, Richard Cook, and Charles Shaar Murray bring back memories.

  7. This music on this compilation CD was recorded between 1961 and 197o or 1971.

The first 13 tracks are solo piano, followed by 3 very enjoyable organ led pieces played by a Quartet with Duke (piano), Wild Bill Davis (organ), Joe Benjamin (bass) & Rufus Jones (drums).

Picked up a cheap vinyl copy while rooting around a Disk Union in western Tokyo. Pretty crackly though so I've given it a couple of dips in the cleaner, listening to the CD version in the meanwhile.

Just wanted to say hi (very first post)! Joined the forum because of Jazz Beat, after lurking for a long time, learning very much. Little intimidated because i can't seem to articulate WHY i love particular albums so much, especially the way others seem to. Perhaps, the fact i'm not a musician or trained in any music theory? Anyway, a big THANKS to you ALL - love this thread.

Is there a more joyous music in the world than bebop?

Starting my day off with Tina Brooks "True Blue". Been a while since I listened to this, and it's sounding great! This may be my next Music Matters purchase...

OJC-087 vinyl reissue. Really enjoying Pepper Adams this time around...

The cover shot: Miserable rather than 'moody'. They're not really trying, are they? Great lighting , though.

Any impressions, reviews etc. of the latest batch of BN SHM-CDs would be most appreciated. For example-- has anyone ordered Electric Byrd or A New Perspective in that format?….

I have both at home from Japan but haven't listened to them yet. . . from this batch so far I've listened to I'm Trying to Get Home, Night Dreamer, Compulsion and Dialogue, all of which sound very good. (I've new PS Audio DirectStream firmware in and am breaking in two Stradivarius Cremona interconnects from VooDoo Cable . . . but I think that isn't holding me back from experiencing how these are.)

I listened to Steve Tibbetts' Bye Bye Safe Journey this morning. I was introduced to Tibbetts when I heard the first album being played in a record store in 83. I instantly bought it and YR which is all they had at that store. A couple of months later, I found out he had two albums out on ECM and bought Northern Song and Bye Bye Safe Journey. I must have listened to Northern Song first, because I just remember being very disappointed with the ECM albums. I still don't like Northern Song much, but I don't understand how I could have considered Safe Journey a disappointment. It's among his best.
