Being a bass player, the call to jazz was inevitable.
My first exposure to jazz was in the 70's through the Marvin Hamlisch 45 of 'The Entertainer' by Scott Joplin. I loved the syncopated interplay.
My parents also had the self-titled Manhattan Transfer record, which they would invariably play every Sunday as we sat down to have dinner. My favorite cut on the record opened side 2; That Cat is High.
In high school I started to play bass, and my music teacher at the time asked me if I had heard of Stanley Clarke. (I graduated from Roxborough High in Philly, Stanley's alma matter)
I had not, and then he played me School Days. I was hooked!

The qualities I listen for are primarily the interplay of the rhythm section (piano included).
Over the years, my attention has focused on differing instruments and styles, trying to keep the horizons broad.
Currently, I'm back to the early years of jazz, loving the 30's bands and arrangements.

What th'...? Is that a new release? Is it legit?

That photo was taken in France in 1976 at a festival. Ol' Chazz sure looks tired.

Ah, thanks. That was a sort of 'lost' period for Mingus. He was just beginning his comeback in 1970, which was tragically cut short by his final illness later in the decade.

I love Bobby Jones' work with Mingus (and what I've heard outside of Mingus' group.

    Right now

I believe the photo used on the cover of this bootleg CD (post #661) was taken at the Newport Jazz Festival in July 1958. Columbia was there recording several of their acts (Miles, Ellington, and I think Brubeck also). Hence the expensive microphones.

The Great Tenor Encounters (Hawkins and Coltrane with Ellington). Certainly not the best these sessions have sounded but man the music!

Is there a site to buy/sell/trade jazz? I am curious if this exists or if my only options are ebay/discogs and the local record store. I am on the hunt for a couple records and having little luck.

I first heard this album about 20 years ago. I was astonished to hear Maria Booker practically break down in tears while singing "Dindi." That's quite a performance.

My Japanese wife thinks she's singing "chin chin," which is a cute Japanese word for "genitals."
