I own much of the suggestions, but this is easily my favorite jazz fusion album.

Return to Forever - Light as a Feather for the great song Spain
Sometimes hard to say where jazz or jazz-funk ends and fusion starts but Joe Farrell has a lot of albums I enjoy that I believe are fusion - Penny Arcade is #1 for me, but Canned Funk, Moon Germs and Joe Farrell Quartet arent too far behind.
CTI is the label to peruse as well as their spinoff Kudu. Too many to name but:
Stanley T - Sugar, Salt Song, and Dont Mess with Mr. T
    Freddie Hubard - Red Clay
Johnny Hammond - Breakout and my favorite Higher Ground with Benson, Joe Henderson, and Steve Gadd (start here, very underrated album)
    Randy Weston - Blue Moses
    Fats Theus - Black Out
George Benson - White Rabbit and others
Charles Earland - Leaving this Planet

  3. Very under-rated, but a fusion classic in my book:

I have not heard that album in years. I'm digging out the CD today and going to listen to it. There were some great tunes on that as I recall.

There are some great suggestions here but you might also consider the following:

Tony Williams Lifetime - Emergency! and Turn it Over
Colosseum II - Electric Savage and War Dance
Jack Bruce - Things We Like
Mahavishnu Orchestra - Birds of Fire and Inner Mounting Flame

Seems to be a bit of a John McLaughlin theme going on bar Colloseum II ... in fact, most McLaughlin related late 60s/70s stuff would be on my list.

You seem to have a good handle on it, also consider something along these lines:

Terje Rypdal, Whenever I Seem to Be Far Away

    Love, Devotion Surrender, Mclaughlin/Santana

    Jean Luc Pony, Enigmatic Ocean

My original issue CD was stolen in 2002 during a move from Chicago. I searched everywhere for another copy to no avail as we did not have the resources available as we do now. So after a bunch of sleuthing I took a chance and sent Steve Smith an e-mail, figuring it would end up in a heap of fan e-mail. He was nice enough to immediately reply, but he did not have any leads for me. I was shut out for years until a copy materialized on the Bay. Just a few months ago the pictured album also materialized in mint condition so I snapped it up for cheap. I would have paid $200 :). God bless the internet, and persistence!

Just Highlighting AndydD's choice of The Mahavishnu Orchestra. To me, the 'Godfathers' of Jazz Fusion!
