I've always thought my UK Columbia mono and stereo pressings sound fantastic. The bass in particular smokes on my RP6. Nothing wrong with the stereo mix at all - it rocks and is a nice alternative to the mono.
Cool. I've been looking for a nice original but think I'll hold off until this comes out. Should be good!
Hi Steve, I just wanted to tell you ahead of time that I really thank you for tackling this one. I figured this one was going to be a tough one. I am going to take an especially big interest in any stories you have to tell about the masters and what you had to do. Again, a big thank you goes out to you.
Yes the stereo mix should be an alternative to the mono, except there is no CD with mono. If Audio Fidelity isn't going to do it I guess nobody will.
Personally, I'm grateful that "Truth" was recorded and mixed in a more adventurous time before stereo mixing became boring and samey (drums, bass and vocals in the centre on every song).
I'll also be curious to see if Steve has any stories to tell about the difference between working on "Beck's Bolero" from 1966 while the rest of the album is from 1968. That section of "Beck's Bolero" where Moon knocks over the mic for the drums is also something to think about.
It will be great to hear Steve's results. Just to set the record completely straight in regards to Truth on CD. Every CD pressing for Truth ever created so far except for the Japan Pastmasters TOCP release, have noise reduction and or used a noise reduced source and why they sound pretty bad. I would love to hear what Steve could do with Wired.
I didn't know that about the noise reduction. Luckily I have the Pastmasters CD so I'm set. You should check out the AP SACD of Wired if you haven't already.
I would but I'm not really familiar with Ryan Smith's work. If it were done by Steve there'd be no hesitation because I know he'd fix the one problem, if possible, I've heard on every CD pressing so far. Even if it's the recording itself it would be interesting to hear what Steve's decision would be to address the brightness.
Shepherdfan, I just looked up in email for the email, didn't receive it. Would it be too much trouble for you copy and paste here? I would appreciate that. Thanks!
Oh man...this is great news. One of my all time fave albums getting a "special treatment"! I will follow this post, hope for "Adventures in Mastering", and buy instantly. Thanks Steve!
I agree this yellow disc Truth does sound pretty good. I don't hear a lot of NR applied... I can hear tape hiss on it and the sound has some sizzle. I'm going to buy Steve's regardless. Now, a good-sounding Beck-Ola...
As you have both uk original and sundazed mono, could you share your opinion on how the sundazed mono reissue compare with an original ? Is your sundazed reissue one from the first batch cut at nashville or is it a later one cut by kevin gray at coherent audio ?
The over-saturation of the treble on Jeff's guitar. It's painful at high volume and sounds kind of squeezed. Blow By Blow on the other hand sounds relaxed and incredible up loud.
Ryan Smith is an excellent mastering engineer. I have AP's reissue of Head Hunters on SACD and vinyl; both were remastered by Ryan. They sound wonderful and are by far the best sounding releases of the album. He's definitely one engineer you can trust to do great mastering work.
