That closeout solo on The Doobie Brothers' "How Do The Fools Survive?" originally piqued my interest in finding out which tracks had Baxter solos

He did some pedal steel sessions for the Stray Cats in the early 80s - the 'Rant & Rave' album in particular. Nice, swooping solo on '18 Miles To Memphis' for example

He played a really aggressive flanged-out solo on "Takin It to the Streets" when the Doobies guested on SNL back in the 70's. It was where the sax solo normally is.

Edit: Nowhere to be found on youtube, but it's around the 50-minute mark here.

opening solo of "mr. parker's band" (steely dan).
    brief, fluid and really hot.

Yeah. He holds an extremely high security clearance. I believe he is self-taught as well. A very smart guy.

My guess is that you are thinking of Eugene Levy's Perry Como impression from SCTV. Funny stuff!

While Skunk did play on that track, the solo was by Robben Ford.

Eugene Levy, of course! I can't imagine how I made that mistake. The more SCTV clips I see, the more in awe I am at Levy's versatility.

I saw Skunk play with the Doobie Brothers and as he was tearing up a solo while leaning back on a stool, a friend commented, "Laid back, I recon!" This became oft quoted; a perfect description.

On the Doobies' "Dependin' On You," my guess would be that Patrick Simmons plays the first solo and Baxter the second (better) one. Anyone know if that's right?

And the thing is, he didn't even want to play on that song. I think he told the producer to call Jay Graydon.

He plays one here, also. Killer! Check out Pat Simmons and the guys watching him. They are stunned.
