Also Nuclear Furniture PDC1-4921 was from 1984. It's ok.

I have "Gold" and it's dull, flat, awful sounding.

I've always wondered if the Red Octopus DCC gold cd was worth the big bucks it "sells" for on ebay...any comments on that one?

Tapes were in bad shape for the DCC and it's desirable for collectors only - IMO.

The remaster from 2005? ( not home now) was great.

Freedom At Point Zero came out in 1990 in the USA and 1991 in the Japan. I also have a third early USA pressing of this title but can't find it to know when it was released.

I have the DCC vinyl (same source ?) and the SQ is great - no tape problems I could hear. Can't see Steve cutting from a bad tape source

Red Octopus is a great album, I have the original CD, for the rest I rely on the Collection compilation CD.

I could use a little help with Spitfire on which to get. There seems to be a few different versions. Discounting the imports, Amazon has:

    1997 - ?
2004 - this is a manufactured on demand CD-R, I don't want that, but I see other 2004 RCA/Legacy remasters listed elsewhere. The CD-R is likely a clone of that.
2009 - Amazon doesn't list this as a CD-R, so I assume its a factory pressed CD, but is it a re-issue of the 2004 remaster?

Anyone able to shed some light on these? Does anyone have the 1997? Is it like other 1997 BMG/RCA Jefferston Starship remasters in that it was remastered by Bill Lacey and Mike Hartry? I see those credits on my 1997 "Dragon Fly", which I like the sound of.

Yes, I have the 1997 Spitfire CD (RCA 07863 66876 2). It's the only CD version I have, though I also have the original stereo and quad LPs.

1997 Spitfire was done by Bill Lacey and Mike Hartry. Would love to know what they had to work with on all these 1997 re-issues. I also have the Japan version from 1998. No idea who mastered those CD's, I have a few from that series. THe Japan versions are 20 bit K2 Super Coding. Have never really compared the 2 but the indexing is different. Japan version has "Song To The Sun" as 2 parts - (1 -Ozymandias) and (2 - Don't Let It Rain).

Thanks for the info. Just ordered the 1997 disc from Amazon. I wonder if all those later issues (2004, 2009, and the 2013 original album classics set) are clones of the 1997 disc.

Was "Freedom At Point Zero" released as part of the 1997 remaster series by Bill Lacey and Mike Hartry?

Its been awhile since I owned that title on CD. But if memory serves the answer is yes because I remember buying that title during the late '90s reissue campaign.

When it comes to Jefferson Airplane I've only ever listened to Surrealistic Pillow, so as you can imagine, I don't have a clue about Starship. Are there any albums that are generally considered a high point in the group's career or any consensus essentials? I'm very curious about this group since I really have never heard anything from them. Sorry if this is slightly off-topic.

  23. The first four of five are generally pretty good. Red Octopus (the second) is considered by most to be their best.

Depends on what you like. The first 'Starship' album Blows Against The Empire is one of those 'all-star' albums with almost everyone who was anyone in the late 60's California music scene participating. Along the lines of Crosby's solo LP; melodic, stoney, dreamy at times. Lots of unstructured jams laced with piano and guitar work, best heard at 1 am on a warm summer night.

The first four Jefferson Starship albums proper (Dragonfly through Earth) are superb melodic 70's soft rock. One option to get is 'Gold' - the J.S. compilation with the main hits that filled the AM & FM airwaves during most of the 1970's.

"Gold" is a great compilation of songs, however I found the sound quality to be dismally flat and lifeless.
