Wow, just looked it up. What a bummer. Sad story all around. I was just thinking about the Crumb documentary the other day.
Jesse Crumb, Eureka Resident and Son of Famed Cartoonist Robert Crumb, Dies After New Year's Eve Car Crash in SoHum This is such sad news.
Oh man! This is terrible! I used to hang out on the crumbproducts.com web forum, and Jesse would engage with Robert's fans. I remember a really interesting discussion about the impact on him of seeing all these drawings of his father's sex life.
In the film, Robert talked about how his daughter Sophie was the first person he had ever loved...I can't imagine how seeing that impacted Jesse.
I own the collection Crumb Family Comics, which has some of Jesse's drawings and paintings. Decent work, and he might have eventually become great if he had succeeded in moving out of his father's shadow.
At some point, I have to get caught up on the Complete Crumb series. It's exhaustive, except it doesn't have Oggie and the Beanstalk, which Robert gave to Jesse's mother Dana. Most people only know Crumb's Sixties work, but for me, his best work was in the Eighties, like "Footsie":
I gotta get back to work...but I did stumble across the most Hoffman Forum drawing R. Crumb ever did:
