Other Tull repeated on radio - a Buffalo radio station seemed to be playing Rainbow Blues every time I tuned in.
Same with Q107 in Toronto playing the song Minstrel in the Gallery

When I have heard Tull on radio...yes, generally Aqualung, Bungle and Locomotive Breath. Maybe also Teacher. I remember hearing Hymn 43 in the 80's but not anytime recently.

No, there was a Locomotive Breath / Wind-Up single (Reprise 1054) as well. There were many singles released
outside the US from the Aqualung LP, see a more comprehensive (but out of date) list below. The list of earlier
    US singles:

Love Story / A Song for Jeffrey
    Reprise 0815 (stock & promo)

Living in the Past / Driving Song
    Reprise 0845 (stock & promo)

Sweet Dream / Back to the Family
    Reprise 0886 (stock & promo)
(there are both stock & promo with the same catalog number incorrectly listing the B side as 'Reasons for Waiting')

    Witch's Promise / Teacher
    Reprise 0899 (stock & promo)

Inside / A Time for Everything
    Reprise 0927 (stock & promo)

I used to collect and trade Tull singles, this list is from the Collecting Tull website and
has not been updated in some time (I have a large percentage of these).......

    AWESOME list! Thanks!

I misspoke, though. I meant to say first charting single, which appears to be the case. Lord knows I know better than to trust the internet at large. I'm happily corrected.

I can't believe that I missed LB! My bad.

That said, it still doesn't look like there were all that many Aqualung singles worldwide. I'm not counting the later reissues, especially 1973, when Locomotive Breath in particular seems to have gotten dang near a worldwide re-release, and typically included later songs as the b-sides.

So, for 1971, directly connected to Aqualung:

Australia's only 1971 Tull single was Hymn 43, with Mother Goose as the b-side.

In 1971, both France and Germany issued LB with Hymn 43 as the b-side.

In Italy, it was Aqualung, with Hymn 43 once again the b-side.

    Japan, Hymn 43/Mother Goose.

    Netherlands, Locomotive Breath/Hymn 43.

    New Zealand, Hymn 43/Mother Goose.

Spain didn't do any Aqualung singles, just the Life Is A Long Song EP, and a single of Living In The Past.

UK, no Aqualung singles. Just the Life Is A Long Song EP, but, there was a UK ad specifcally pointing out that there were no Aqualung singles, and that Life Is A Long Song was gonna be it. Lick Your Fingers Clean/Up to Me -- I'm a little confused where this fits in. Can you give me some insight?

In the US, I completely bollixed it. Thanks for the correction.

Anyway, of the 10 major global markets, only 8 issued Aqualung singles, four of those had Hymn 43 as the A side, and 4 more had it as the B-side! By FAR the most dominant single footprint from Aqualung.

Unless I've counted this wrong. LOL Easily possible. I also used 45cat as my source, and it is admittedly incomplete, so, again, I'm happily corrected....but as long (and awesome) as your list is, I don't see much more in the way of Aqualung-specific singles in 1971. And in any case, Hymn 43 easily on top.

Any corrections notwithstanding, I still find this an endlessly fascinating as an insight into 1971's release strategy, and how different it is than what got played that year, and the years since.

Thanks again for your additional detail!

I found the ad I was thinking of! NME Sept. 4, 1971, in which we learn that "Lick Your Fingers Clean" was recorded but withdrawn. I love this ad for a bunch of reasons, including its self-deprecating wit. "The people who decide these things didn't think it was commercial and we had a nagging doubt about charging ten bob for two tracks, so we made a lame excuse and withdrew it."

They mention that one of the songs is an Aqualung outtake (which one, though?), but I think I can rest my case that there were no Aqualung singles in the UK.

Also, my clarification about "Hymn 43" being the first Tull single to chart in the US appears to be correct. "Living In The Past" was an earlier song of course, but didn't chart until its 1972 re-release following the compilation album bearing that name.

From what I've seen of Ian Anderson, he is an absolute nut case. That's his problem I guess, he seems to be getting along OK. Some of the things he created are at a level that precludes normal thought. We benefit from this on an album like Aqualung, one of the best ever IMO. The Wilson mix is now available on vinyl at under $25. The best version? Maybe. I don't have a better one in my seven or so copies. It just wasn't executed that well off the bat unfortunately. At this price, this album sounding this good should be a no brainer to anyone who wants to check it out.

There was an interview with Ian on one of the reissues, 25th anniversary perhaps, and he felt he badly oversang sections of the album. Overzealous youth and passion!

Actually Ian has been fairly consistent on his likes and dislikes regarding those productions from the past. He's always considered tunes like Living In the Past and Bungle In The Jungle to be commercial compromises, delivered mostly to keep his handlers - the record companies - happy so they'd have something to push that's radio friendly. Teacher is another I've heard he was never too pleased with, for whatever reason(s). [Possibly the same as above]

Stand Up has long been the album he is most fond of, and proud of. FWIW.

I was a hardcore Tull fan back in the day. My favorites were their 1st 3 records, Thick As A Brick was a turning point for me, a negative one. Prior to TAAB, I'd seen them twice at the Fillmore East and another time in an even smaller theater in the round. Than TAAB was released, a huge smash that was played everywhere but I didn't like it anywhere near as much as the earlier releases. But the biggest game-changer for me was the next time I went to see them (during the TAAB tour) was at the Nassau Coloseum. It was the 1st time I'd ever gone to such a huge venue for a concert and I hated it! Never bought another Tull album again! To this day I cringe whenever I hear the words "Sitting on a park bench"!;)

Are you saying you weren't impressed with Aqualung when it was first released - or when you first discovered it - or were you a victim of burnout from overplay and saturation (something that affects us all)?

I ask because I rarely if ever spin up Aqualung anymore from burnout, but still remember how I once really got into those verses. Ironic too that I wasn't all that crazy for TAAB or APP as follow-ups either. But unlike yourself, I kept on chuggin' with Tull for many years to come. I still remember the big wave they made almost two decades later when they snatched that silly Grammy right out of hapless Metallica's paws (we're talking the late 80's now). :uhhuh: That was right around the time Tull had something of a rebirth on the charts with tunes like Part Of The Machine, Farm On The Freeway, Steel Monkey and Kissing Willie. Sorry you gave up on JT so early on.

I'll just pile on a bit from what zelox said ( :D ) You missed some pretty good stuff. Mainly, for me, Live Bursting Out, Songs From The Woods, Heavy Horses, Stormwatch, Broadsword, The Jethro Tull Christmas album and A Little Light Music to name a few of my favorites after you stopped listening. If you were a fan once, I think there is something in these you might like.

I have somehow ended up with only Wilson mixes, LP and CD. I guess it's not as bad as Thick As A Brick where the multiple mixes are good to have. I got rid of a lot of duplicate CDs in the last 2 years due to a move that happened last Jan. Any point in searching out the older CD? The Wilson LP is pretty much all I plan to have on vinyl. The rekkid store has a copy on the wall by the cash register for over 100 dollars.
