He could always backup the Moody Blues on flute and tambourine.
Less embarrassing than this ridiculous set.
His love for money and control are obvious now.
There is nothing remaining of the JT of old.

That picture has been on Tull's website for some months, at least. I don't think it's meant to suggest anything (but I sure hope it did...).

Ian Anderson Celebrates Jethro Tull With September UK Tour

Ian Anderson has announced a 2015 UK tour, titled Jethro Tull – The Rock Opera.

Honouring the 18th Century English agriculturalist, after which the band was named back in 1968, the shows tell the story of the original Jethro Tull's life, re-imagined as if in the near future and illustrated through the band's repertoire.

The set list will include Wind Up, Heavy Horses, Aqualung, Back to the Family, Farm on the Freeway and Songs from the Wood, with some revised lyrics and five newly written songs also added to the mix.

Performing with Anderson will be David Goodier on bass, John O’Hara on keyboards, Florian Opahle on guitar, Scott Hammond on drums plus some ‘virtual guests’ on a big video screen.

Considering it's a name Ian wants to retire, JETHRO TULL is certainly in big letters.

I have never seen it anywhere from either Martin or Ian that Martin quit.

Given that his musicianship is still top caliber, it's sad to think he should stop performing because he no longer has much range as a singer. This, undoubtedly is why he brought in Ryan. But yes, something about Ryan rubs me the wrong way. Maybe he should have sought out a singing band mate or a contingent of background singers, instead of a theater type wandering around stage simulating masturbation on a bo-stick. A flute, fine, but a non musical devise just crosses a line. :D

Ryan was perfect for the role but Ian wouldn't get out of the way and let him rip.
The alternating vocals on some of the songs showed just how far gone his voice is
and the lack of chemistry on stage makes the rest look like what they are - hired
    hands.

I've got a tough choice to make in the next day or two with pre-sales beginning to
happen. I've gone to multiple shows on every North American leg of each tour (Tull
and solo) since February of 1969. I may have to take a pass on this one.......

I've got a buddy in town that's gotten me amazing seats to the last two IA NC appearances, but after passing on the reunited Fleetwood Mac show due to $, it'll be hard to justify going to this one.

I saw them at the Beacon Theatre in 1992 for the Light and Dark Tour.
That was probably their best post voice tour before they became a Tull Revue band. (I saw them in 1999 and 2002 and it was basically the same show).

Now he's remaking the old songs again with his old voice and a string quartet?

When did he say he wanted to retire it?

I miss Martin Barre too, but it's not like there was a recognizable Jethro Tull lineup for a long time before he went "solo.". Does anyone even remember the last bass and keyboard players?

In all the recent interviews, he's pretty much saying it.
The last bass/keys I remember are Andrew Giddings and Jon Noyce. They sounded like a Tull cover band by then.

I didn't care for Giddings/Noyce at all-- Giddings overdid the programmed synth sounds in a big way. But even those two were replaced on the last couple of tours as Tull.

It seems that what IA's been saying is that "Jethro Tull" is him, so he has a right to present that material under his own name. You can argue that it's really him and Martin, and I'd agree-- but Martin wasn't always around in the last days of Tull either.

When and why was Barre not playing with Tull? I never knew that

There were some European shows toward the end of Tull where Florian Ophale (IA's current guitarist) took Martin's place.
