Hence my upcoming book "Modern Listener Guide: Jimi Hendrix," with a foreword by Derek Trucks and an afterword by John McLaughlin. Official announcement coming soon - I'm holding the release to incorporate Both Sides of the Sky....

There were 3 B-sides. Two were released on other albums. The third was released in a different form.

"Peace In Mississippi" was added to the "Purple Box" set re-release.

"Jam 292 (alternate)" is from the Dagger release "Hear My Music"

"Cat Talking To Me (w/ 1980's overdubs)" was released on the "West Coast Seattle Boy" box set without
    the overdubs

Best of luck with your book. I don't have any Hendrix guides, so I'd be interested. Make sure a wait for all the odd ball off shoot bonus track releases to be announced. ie Walmart / Target /downloads / vinyl singles etc...

I don’t think your sample size of one person (yourself) is big enough to conclude that nobody is being fooled or cheated. It’s fine for the educated listener but there are other uneducated people who fall into purchasing this kind of stuff without knowing what they are buying. Potential new fans, or people buying gifts for others, for example, will buy it on the assumption that it’s Hendrix so it must be good. And be sadly disappointed.

I remember reading that too. It's a bit of a mystery how a full-band performance with vocals of a Hendrix original has never been dug up before. Probably they were all aborted takes or very rough. We'll see.

I forgot that most of that drum beat/sitar "Cherokee Mist" was on the Live & Unreleased/Lifelines radio show collection with good sound.

    Your misrepresenting Kramer's statement:

Believe that he "hopefully" thought "P,H&A" would be the last...
did not think it would be personally tho.

Do wonder why at the time Eddie wasn't considering "Black Gold" to be the last...
    i do!

I was not quoting him from NAMM. Kramer stated it in other interviews around the time of release.

Can’t wait for this. Will be very useful, I hope. Does it go session by session, gig by gig, itemising what was recorded and which takes/edits were issued on which releases?

I can think of 5 subjects where I took what Kramer said with a grain of salt.

-Kramer said "last studio album" and only live stuff in the immediate future. Now we have a 2018 studio album.

    -Kramer/Douglas and the "Frankensteining" issue

-saying bad things about the PPX stuff, then preparing it for EH release.

-He teased a Maui release 2-3 years ago on twitter or instagram, then yanked the photo.

-Saying he prefers the CD albums from uncompressed masters he's heard. 2010 or 2011 reissues were all the same compressed masters.

You mentioned that you chose from 16 unheard tracks – does that mean there’s a chance there might be another album released with tracks we haven’t heard before?

We probably even had more than 16 or 17, but the mantra is pick the best stuff, and whatever doesn’t make the album probably will not come out. Not if I have anything to do with it, because we want to keep the standards as high as possible. Now I know there are some rabid fans out there, but I work for the estate, give me a break!

Will that mean this is the last album then?

No, no, no, goodness gracious me, who said that? This will be the last of the studio type albums. Guess what folks, we’ve got a bunch of stuff in the can that’s gonna blow your mind. We’ve got tons of live stuff, and fortunately not only is the live amazing performances, but most of these performances were filmed and we have the film as well. I’m working on two at the moment, but I can’t tell you anymore because I’ll have to kill everybody and myself, and that’d be a pain. These are great. Of a scale of 1 to 10, they’re at the 10 level, and filmed.

The Elvis catalog could give it a run for its money in terms of confusion.

Atlanta and Maui are the 2 filmed shows. Plus the Machine Gun disc and the early stuff.

"Mind Blowing" is relative. Cal Expo/RAH/Dallas 1970 would floor me, and maybe Maui if they can do some heavy salvage work.

No, it's not as "in the weeds" as that - that's what From the Benjamin Franklins Studios is good for, as a resource for pure documentation. Instead, one goal of this book is to give someone with no exposure to Jimi or a more casual exposure to Jimi an understanding of what releases are out there and what is on them, including releases that are now out of print but available via eBay, Amazon marketplace, or even here in the CD sales section. It's also designed to give an understanding of *why* - technically and artistically - he is held in such esteem both as a writer and a guitarist, and why his image still appears so frequently in popular culture. The contents are roughly in chronological order, within text providing an account of Jimi's life. That's to provide the context of what was happening to him when these various recordings were made. It's a fairly sizeable work, about 135,000 words, and has clocked in at about five years of work. I've sweated the details, striving for factual accuracy. There will also be a number of never published photos, including the cover image. I also hope that the participation of Derek Trucks and John McLaughlin speaks to the quality of the content. When we get closer to the release - as eBook and full-color printed - I'll start a thread with more details about why the book was written, the approach, the contents, and a link to a sample chapter.

My hope is that people who are deeply into Hendrix will also enjoy it, just to read the perspective. Someone who was invaluable in providing feedback and criticism - who also is participating in this thread - provided a massive complement by noting that reading what I wrote about each of the 50 or so releases in the book made him want to pull that title out for a listen. You can't ask for more than that :righton:

I hope that the photos from Buffalo '68 that were then newly discovered back around 2011 and shared in one of the Hendrix threads here are among the ones which have never been seen before. Please let all of us know when your book will be available to order.
