I think the big disappointment is Burning of the Midnight Lamp. It sounds much better on the original 45.

I've always thought this was due to tracks being recorded at different studios with different engineers

Saving the unedited tapes for a box set down the road, gotta put them out like a slowly dripping faucet :D

Re: Winterland, I think that very well could be the case. I'll confess to adding my own reverb to both "South Saturn Delta" and "Jungle" as that was how I was used to hearing them before they were officially (re) issued with drier mixes. The reverb on Alan Douglas' Winterland release doesn't bother me. On EH's Winterland box, however, I feel I really get a good sense of the hall ambiance on those tapes (when listening with good headphones). Overall, I really like the sound of that box set. Re: IOW, the audio from the DVD/Blu Ray actually sounds better (more bass, overall fuller sound to my ears). I also like the way Machine Gun album sounds, however there IS less bass on most tracks compared to the orginal BOG album from 1970. Others have said there isn't enough bass on Machine Gun but I do not agree; it just isn't as pronounced as it is on the BOG LP. I also think Atlanta sounds better than it did on Stages. While re-releases from the same set of source tapes may sound different due to mixing and mastering choices, there are many other reasons they could sound different. A to D converters have changed/improved over time and the tapes themselves may have deteriorated over time, necessitating some aural choices in the presentation (to name a couple). We're actually very lucky those Band Of Gypsys Fillmore East multitracks were stored as well as they were for so long.

True but the task of the mastering tech is to get a consistent vibe out of the thing. And with all the changes in fidelity are kinda dramatic. I wasn't lying when I said it goes from 'Dang this sounds great' to 'wtf' just happened to the sound quality?

The bass question has never bothered me since I started collecting albums 1970. If an album lacks a bit, I turn the bass knob up. Presto!
Too trebly? Turn the treble down. Of course it's better for the whole mix/master if things are well balanced at the outset but that is subjective also.

The problem with Winterland is the horrendous edits to the 10/11 Are You Experienced and 10/12 Red House. I still can't believe they did that. No musical reason wbatsoever for these edits. The parts of Are You Experienced removed contain some of my favourite live Jimi moments ever.

The middle of the 10/12 Red House including half of the (perfectly fine) guitar solo. You don't do that. Not to Red House. Unforgivable.

Jimi was disappointed with the 45T version of "Burning", which is why he put it on Ladyland, to get the improve the sound!

Re Winterland...in addition to the 6 sets at least one soundcheck was also recorded to 8 track. A fantastic version of Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window is all that circulates.

Don't get me started on South Saturn Delta - the EH mix of that completely ruined it. I remember being so eager to have it in full and then we got that ridiculous mix that took all of the reverb off the horns and sounded horrible. I am pretty sure the L&U/Lifelines version was a better reflection of what the track would have sounded like - the horns were blended into the track nicely, and then when EH put it out the horns, devoid of reverb were reduced to squeaks that completely spoiled the vibe of the track as we knew it. I also liked Jungle with the reverb, but can live with it as released - but SSD mix was so very, very disappointing as I loved that track.

The mono mix of "Burning of the Midnight Lamp" has, to my knowledge, only been released on CD in the 2003 The Singles Collection box set.

I've been collecting Hendrix for 40 years and I have never heard the original mono mix of BOTML or STPWLSD. Being as that single is the bridge between AYE and ABAL it would be nice to get those mixes on the upcoming SACDs.

  25. The mono STPWLSD has been available on the original 1968 Smash Hits (UK) album ever since its release!
