  1. What is left from Nine to the Universe that is still unreleased on CD?

Just the title track hasn't been reissued in any form

Drone Blues and Jimi-Jimmy were on Hear My Music in their full versions
Hendrix-Young was on WCSB in its full version
Easy Blues is on PHA in a slightly longer version than 92tU. The original version is 10 minutes, "twice as long the previously issued version" as they mentioned in the materials, but when you cut Larry's parts out, you're left with the 6 minutes on PHA.

Strato Strut from Morning Symphony Ideas was meant to be on 92tU at one point but was dropped.

Nice job! I actually just did a New Rising Sun/Dolly Dagger mix for myself for a First Rays playlist. I did the split with part 1 up to where the drums come in and mixed part 2 on the end of Hey Baby so it’s a New Rising Sun suite of Izabella/Bolero/Hey Baby/New Rising Sun (Part 2) to end the album.

Ah, just looking at this again, I left Highway Chile off of War Heroes in error.

    Side Two
    Midnight
    51st Anniversary
    Power of Soul
    Highway Chile
    Drifter's Escape

Also, add Foxy Lady from LA to side one of In the West

Looks like Taking Care of No Business will have to wait for Loose Ends :hide:

I did playlists for my alternate Cry of Love and Rainbow Bridge, they sound good. What we could have had...

How far back can you go back and edit one of your posts?

My own AYE tracklisting encompasses both Red Houses:

    Purple Haze
    Manic Depression
    Hey Joe
    Can You See Me
    Remember
    Red House (UK)
    Stone Free
    51st Anniversary
    Highway Chile
    Love or Confusion
    May This Be Love
    I Don't Live Today
    Fire
    The Wind Cries Mary
    Red House (US)
    Third Stone From the Sun
    Foxy Lady
    Are You Experienced

For a CD, I'd put the A/B sides of the first 3 singles, the UK version then have the US Red House as a bonus

Highway Chile was the stereo mix so it's not really an alternate version, but it would have to be considered it putting together a package of separate stereo and mono mixes (The stereo mix is currently my default one when putting together playlists). Same with Watchtower, it's just the early mix from SSD but would need to be included on an EL box as that.

Stone Free was the one from April 69 and Spanish Castle Magic is the Olympic one from Feb 69, so they'd belong with those respective boxes.

  16. Not "original"; not even original to this thread:
    'Finished' tunes chronologically.
What is something, that i may have added originally to SHMF before, is the studio tapes, released in "whole" [flubs/false starts/& all of each studio session]. Also, chronologically, if possible [tapes were not 'secured' chronologically by EH].
    So, dream scenario:
    1. Finished Songs chronologically.
    2. Studio Jams chronologically.
    3. Live Recordings chronologically.
    4. Studio Tapes chronologically.*

    * for the gotta have everything aficionados/collectors [similar to "Pearl Jam" releasing a ceedee of every show from one tour].

Positive EH/Dagger Releases [so far] IMO*:
    "Cry of Love".
    "Rainbow Bridge".
    "West Coast Seatle Boy".
    "Burning Desire".
    "Morning Symphony Ideas".
    "The Baggy Rehearsal Sessions".
    "Hear My Music".
    "Martin Scorsese Presents The Blues".
    "Blues".
    + video stuff!!

    * not saying there are not any other titles, that fit the parameter, just wanted to shed some positive light.

    Enjoy.

    on the thread!

I listen to Cry of Love and Rainbow Bridge as released. I love those albums.

I made my own War Heroes using the remaining tracks from First Rays and South Saturn Delta.

    Beginnings
    Izabella
    Stepping Stone
    Bleeding Heart
    Tax Free
    Power of Soul
Message to the Universe (Message to Love)
    Drifters Escape
    Midnight Lignting.

I find this to be a highly enjoyable concise album. I kind of hope they consider releasing something like this to accompany Cry of Love and Rainbow Bridge, they could even call it War Heroes and use the cover, just improve the track list . Something that is more like an album proper rather than including tracks where Jimi is the side man.

I also enjoy Valleys of Neptune and People, Hell and Angels from time to time.

If they reissue War Heroes, they could add the best tracks from Loose Ends as bonus tracks, Drifter's Escape, Come Down Hard On Me and The Stars That Play With Laughing Sam's Dice (originally on the War Heroes track listing but held back for Loose Ends). In addition, Kramer and McDermott said they should have included 51st Anniversary on War Heroes. Another track they could have used was the cover of Gloria which later ended up on The Essential Jimi Hendrix.

I'm nut sure of you know the story but originally Dolly Dagger and Room Full Of Mirrors were on the Cry of Love track listing but Kramer and Mitchell were told to pull them to save some good tracks for Rainbow Bridge and use Straight Ahead and My Friend instead. In addition, Stepping Stone and Izabella from War Heroes were bumped from Rainbow Bridge so they could add the live version of Hear My Train A Comin'. Bleeding Heart which actually appears in the Rainbow Bridge movie soundtrack was also considered. In retrospect, it would have probably been better to include the live Hear My Train A Comin on In The West.

Hopefully they will reissue some kind of War Heroes/Loose Ends combo. Thing is if they do they render South Saturn Delta practically irrelevant. I’ve advocated a reissue that consists of all of War Heroes, side one of Loose Ends and only Electric Ladyland from side two (BD and HCM at home on Baggy’s), leaving more room for bonuses. But that’s probably too complicated and they’d do a straight reissue on one disc with 51st as a bonus.

Maybe they could add the other tracks from South Saturn Delta that had not appeared before as a bonus on War Heroes reissue along with the Loose Ends tracks I mentioned above.

Personally, I don't really need Jam 292 or Have You Ever Been (To Electric Ladyland) again or Blue Suede Shoes either for that matter.

Alternate universe, revisionist history whatever you want to call it. All songs original versions before the Frankensteining. If we're talking a 1970 double-Lp release on vinyl (45-50 min. ea. record) of his strongest songs, this is my take.

First Rays of the New Rising Sun - Dec. 1st 1970

    S1
    Roomfull of Mirrors
    Earth Blues
    Ezy Ryder
    Valleys of Neptune
    Dolly Dagger
    S2
    Freedom
    Night Bird Flying
    Angel
    Straight Ahead
    Hey Baby (New Rising Sun)

    Single release:
    Izabella b/w Midnight

Since Warner/Reprise would kick and scream about releasing a double album, for that eventuality Hendrix should have had a discount coupon included in each record for x dollar(s) off for fans to order the 2nd record (poster included ;-) directly from the Jimi Hendrix Fan Club. Either way, distributed by WB or directly from Jimi, here's the 2nd record.

    S3
    Power of Soul
    Message to Love
    Izabella
Machine Gun (bit of a stretch, the studio versions are no where near completed)
    S4
Stepping Stone (def. needs edit/tightened up, & remix)
    Beginnings
    Bleeding Heart
In From the Storm (I'm undecided on this one, probably should not make the cut)
    Drifters Escape

    Loose Ends - 1972
Could be organized into running orders that make sense stylistically, or chronologically, i.e. earliest stuff, '67 '68 first etc. if released as a series one Lp at a time.

    In no particular order:

    My Friend
    Astro Man
    Drifting
    Come Down Hard on Me
    Cherokee Mist

    Belly Button Window
    Tax Free
    Somewhere
    Peace in Mississippi
    Pali Gap

    Jam 292
    Burning Desire
    I'm a Man
    Hoochie Coochie Man
    Mastermind

    Crash Landing
    Blue Suede Shoes
    Jam #3 (Untitled Basic Track)
    Look Over Yonder
    Tears of Rage

    Calling All Devils Children
    Cat Talking to Me
    Send My Love to Linda
    Little One
    South Saturn Delta

Lover Man (from the S.S.D. release)
    Peter Gunn/Catastrophe
    Taking Care of No Business
    Lonely Avenue
    Doriella Du Fontaine

...and probably several other tracks I can't think of right now. A wealth of material. An embarrassment of riches. Again, enough for a double Lp or even two doubles. Or a series of single Lp's. Anyway, three or four records of stuff that COULD have been handled much differently/better organized/respectfully than it was.

This is all I.M.O. YMMV, just for fun, no wang was chunged or pets put in overhead bins in the making of this post. Don't get triggerred ;-) Enjoy it for what it is. One man's take on what should have happened instead of the piece-meal clusterf**k mismanagement of Jimi's music after his death.

    cheers,
    Chaz

And I haven't even got to the live releases yet. That is a whole other kettle of fish.

That would certainly be a good option, SSD and ML fit in with the concept and material. The frustrating thing about reissuing Loose Ends is you could leave off Jam and the Baggy’s stuff on side 2 since they are on better Dagger releases. The original mixes for Come Dowm and Drifter’s should be out there. And I like the Blue Suede Shoes studio banter, so sue me. (Darn it, why isn’t that smiley emoji showing up?)

Think this is better responded to over here.

South Saturn Delta was never meant to be a cohesive album, it was a compilation. You took the remaining unreleased tracks from Rainbow Bridge, a few more from War Heroes, an alternate from Loose Ends and a few more random tracks from all through Jimi's career. I know I pulled it apart and spread the tracks around and have rarely ever listened to it top to bottom. If we ever get a full War Heroes reissue, about half of this album will be rendered irrelevant.

VoN, as well as PHA and BSOTS, were attempts to make "coherent" albums out of basically the same kind of material. It's up to each listener to decide how they hang together (Personally, I generally think they do, putting whatever qualms about the choice of material aside).

For what it's worth, after endless versions of this exercise, I've come up with my personal take on a 3 LP (2 CD) take on First Rays of the New Rising Sun.

As for the usual personal reconstruction guiding principles and limitations used here:

    - For the first 3 sides, with the exception of Pali Gap (or Electric Lady - Slow), I followed the fabled 3 sided track listing.
    - I used all 16 confirmed original mixes that Jimi did with Eddie Kramer or Bob Hughes. These are marked with an *.
    - Kept each side under 21 minutes, except for "Jimi's" possible Side C.
    - Used only officially released tracks (hence the compromise of using the "hybrid" Valleys of Neptune instead of the unofficial September 23, 1969 Hit Factory version we all know and love)
    - Used the best digital sources (except Hey Baby, in order to "accommodate" the mastering of Bolero)
    - To fill out the second CD, I added "bonus tracks", 3 of which are only available unofficially and are marked with **.
    - No element of any track recorded prior to August, 1969.

    Disc 1 (1:19:01)

    Side A (20:48)
    01. Dolly Dagger (4:40 - Rainbow Bridge) *
    02. Pali Gap (instrumental) (5:10 - Rainbow Bridge)
    03. Night Bird Flying (3:52 - The Cry of Love) *
    04. Room Full of Mirrors (3:31 - Rainbow Bridge) *
    05. Belly Button Window (3:35 - The Cry of Love) *

    07. Ezy Ryder (4:10 - The Cry of Love) *

    18. Izabella (2:46 - The Singles Collection) *
    19. Bleeding Heart (3:19 - War Heroes)
    20. Lover Man (2:58 - The Jimi Hendrix Experience Purple Box Set)

    Disc 2 (1:17:55)

    Side E (19:45)
    21. Valleys Of Neptune (composite) (4:04 - Valleys Of Neptune)

    Bonus Tracks (39:48)
    29. Send My Love To Linda (composite) (4:38 - Both Sides of the Sky)
    30. Country Blues (instrumental) (8:27 - The Jimi Hendrix Experience Purple Box Set)
    31. Suddenly November Morning (demo) (4:12 - West Coast Seattle Boy)
    32. Burning Desire (rehearsal take 2) (7:20 - The Baggy's Rehearsal Sessions)
    33. Midnight Lightning ("Keep On Grooving") (4:13 - Studio 70') **
    34. Midnight Lightning ("Stoop Down") (6:17 Astro Man Box Set) **
    35. Can I Whisper In Your Ear (4:41 - Studio 70') **

    * original Jimi Hendrix/Eddie Kramer or Jimi Hendrix/Bob Hughes mix
    ** unofficial recording

With the important exception of swapping the composite Valleys of Neptune for the original September 23, 1969 version in order to keep the main event official, I think I can slowly back away from this almost seasonal disorder of compiling the last year of this great man's work into a couple of CD's. It can't be helped, this music is just too special get away from for too long. Thanks for reading.
