During Jimi´s final year, he got close to finish the next album - whether it was going to be called First Rays of the New Rising Sun or not...

Below is a list of all officially Experience Hendrix released studio recordings from this year.
Not including home/apartment/hotel etc. demos/recordings, the Baggy´s rehearsals or Jimi as a guest artist.
The only Alan Douglas-supervised release that´s included is Blues, as that was rereleased by Experience Hendrix.
All mixes (except where noted) are by Eddie Kramer, done in the EH era from 1996 and onwards.
The exception is that Blues was mixed by Mark Linett (c. 1993).
Noted are mixes done by Jimi as well as the early posthumous (1970-72) Eddie mixes.

Jimi did lots of overdub to many of these tracks, so it´s a bit hard to pin down the exact correct dates. Tracks are listed in the order when the basic track was recorded. (+ indicates overdubs).
    Main sources:
CD liner notes / Ultimate Hendrix by McDermott / Jimpress books and magazines.
When conflicting info exists, I have chosen what to believe in... (mostly the latest known info).

    Dates are day/month.

5 or 6 CDs will make a nice chronological collection of these tracks!
And/or a 2-CD set of the very best of your choice...:D

The interesting thing about this one:

    Ultimate Hendrix:, Page 242

"In recent years, a quarter-inch tape that had been running simultaneously in the Electric Lady control room surfaced, and it reveals that almost immediately after the multitrack tape stopped, the jam came apart."

Its too bad they couldnt report that the jam lasted another 8 minutes. Still, I'd like to hear this with what exists of the rest of it.

Thanks again for your list!!! I now see that I need to consider getting Morning Symphony Ideas...I had kinda written that off as more bed room/hotel room solo recordings? Is there a lot of studio stuff to be of interrest?

Anyway, I made similar playlists in iTunes like yours Crozcat, but I left out anything from First Rays, only because in my "mythology" I have long considered that to be one of the 4 "Oficial" albums. I know its not, but those tracks sound finished and polished and do not come across as outtakes or jams like most of the other posthumous stuff.

Of the Dagger studio releases, perhaps Morning Symphony Ideas is not as good as Hear My Music and Burning Desire. It´s still essential, though!:righton:
Apart from the four tracks above (appr. 48 minutes), there´s a fascinating (21 mins) August 1970 private recording/medley, Scorpio Woman (including Midnight Lightning and more). Plus a totally unnecessary 1-minute acoustic demo.

First Rays of the New Rising Sun:
I think there are some great tracks missing from the official EH release. Regardless of what Jimi would have included on his next album, I think Drifter´s Escape, Pali Gap and Bleeding Heart (all on South Saturn Delta) should be on there.
I also prefer the BOG Stepping Stone/Izabella (on Voodoo Child) to the later versions on First Rays. Maybe Power Of Soul (SSD) and Message To Love (Purple box) should be included, I never can seem to decide...
My Friend sounds out of place (being an Electric Ladyland leftover), and Beginnings is not really good enough - they are out.
So, the following tracks are the ones on my version of First Rays (double LP or single CD):
Ezy Ryder (Cry Of love / FRNRS)
    Dolly Dagger (Rainbow Bridge /FRNRS)
    Night Bird Flying (COL /FRNRS)
    Freedom (COL / FRNRS)
    Angel (COL / FRNRS)
    Hey Baby (RB / FRNRS)
    Pali Gap (RB / SSD)
    Drifter´s Escape (SSD)
    Izabella (Voodoo Child)
In From The Storm (COL / FRNRS)
    Straight Ahead (COL /FRNRS)
    Earth Blues (RB / FRNRS)
Room Full Of Mirrors (RB / FRNRS)
    Drifting (COL /FRNRS)
    Astro Man (COL / FRNRS)
Bleeding Heart (War Heroes / SSD)
    Stepping Stone (Voodoo Child)
Belly Button Window (COL / FRNRS)
and sometimes I´d like to include Power Of Soul (SSD) and Message To love (JHE aka Purple box).
Other times Beginnings (WH / FRNRS) IS good enough...:D
All these tracks don´t fit on a single CD...hmm

    Incredible lists. Thank you!
Do you consider making a list of the tracks recorded between 1966-1968 and not included on the three studio albums?

Yes, the basics are done - it´s a bit more uncertain due to less available precise facts from the Are You Experienced sessions, though...

And thanks for all positive reactions!:D

Totally agree regarding "Pali Gap". Stunningly beautiful and organic, It's easily one of the best things he ever did. "Bleeding Heart" is OK, but by Hendrixonian standards, nothing special. I can take it or leave it. "Drifter's Escape" though, is possibly the worst thing he ever did. The singing is awful, the drums are unimaginative and even the guitar playing is off, with Jimi wailing away aimlessly throughout the entire song. I can't imagine him releasing this song without major revisions.

Quibbles aside, Jimi left enough great material to easily fill a double LP.

If I remember correctly, Pali Gap is not a real song but an excerpt from a longer jam called Slow Part with overdubs added later. Basically it was an edit created after the fact but still pretty cool. Eddie Kramer says it was never planned to be a part of the First Rays double lp. Mike Jeffrey named it Pali Gap to tie in with the Hawaiian theme of Rainbow Bridge.

That would explain why the feel of the piece is so free flowing and organic. I'm just grateful that Jimi was inspired to add the overdubs. I can picture him in Electric Lady with a his eyes closed, totally in the moment, laying down that exquisite lead.

I love late-period Hendrix, but I've never "gotten" Pali Gap. It sounds sort of aimless to me, but it always seems to be held in high regard around here. Drifter's Escape is another odd one. Hendrix never seems to actually connect with the song, as he usually did with a Dylan material, and instead turns it into a repetitive groove/guitar wail-fest. Who knows though, I have a feeling Hendrix wouldn't have actually used ALL of the guitar layers on some of those later songs.
