Just wondering if there are any folks here who even know who this guy is, let alone dig his work. He used to front a band called the Czars, whom I know nothing about, but his album Queen Of Denmark got an enthusiastic five-star review in Mojo recently and that intrigued me to check him out. And it’s good, really good – a bit downbeat and midtempo in the main but the guy has a rich voice and a way with a tune. But what made me think he’d go down well around here: he admits to being influenced by Supertramp, and to being “blown away” by Bread’s “London Bridge”! Normally those sorts of confessions are warning bells for me but I’m glad I saw past the “soft rock” warning signs. And I certainly hear some WYWH-era Floyd in several of his songs. Anyway, some sample tracks courtesy of YouTube: “It’s Easier”: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NFGcZr-xi-A “Chicken Bones”: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-dPVyM2hYc “Sigourney Weaver”: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v6iWtIFJ-og "Where Dreams Go To Die": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2mumQ6wmKY “Marz”: the first single off the album; this official video is a bit weird and morbid in a ‘70s children’s show kind of way, but the song is great… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mzWQSabtWLs So: I'm interested to hear what folks think, especially those who gave up on music in 1979... Oh, and I forgot to mention that Midlake is his backing band...perhaps should have flagged that!
