He was found dead in a hotel where he was recovering after undergoing back surgery. The Santa Clara Medical Examiner’s office confirmed his death.

And how creepy is this. I was just talking about him in another thread a few weeks ago where the "Cat People" movie closing was mentioned.

I remember him more from Big than Home Alone, but that's beside the point. Rip.

He made the most of his funny and poignant role in Chilly Scenes of Winter too. It's tough to pull off being an 'everyday' guy with no grandstanding scenes.

Apparently, his back surgery was only minor, nothing too major.

He also played an incredible part in The Sopranos as a corrupt detective. Every Christmas when they air Home Alone it is still a joy to watch. Rest in peace Mr. Heard.

It's neither here nor there, but why was he recovering in a hotel after back surgery? That seems lonely, he should have been home, comfortable, surrounded by family.

And this is why I've been avoiding having 'minor back surgery.'

I was scheduled for a microdiscectomy in June. It's an outpatient procedure, in early and home by afternoon. Not sure which surgery he had.

"Cutters Way" too, in which (get this) Jeff Bridges played the more normal pal, and John went off the rails pursing a conspiracy. Maybe his best performance. Another film that deserves more appreciation:

I can't remember the first film I saw him in, but I was impressed with him in 1985's "Trip To Bountiful" which
I saw at a local theater.
