Not trying to overwhelm the thread, but Holt's tunes are just so beautiful. He made it sound easy.

Really great singer. RIP. There's now barely any of the great roots reggae vocalists still alive. Almost all of them have died relatively prematurely. It is a great shame but what wonderful music and singing guys like John Holt, Dennis Brown, Gregory Isaacs, Horace Andy etc have given us.

  5. John Holt. What a singer, and one who recorded in a variety of styles and for numerous Jamaican producers over the decades, always riding the best of rhythms too.

Outside of what's already been mentioned up-thread here are half a dozen classic 7" singles titles that are all guaranteed to please (although I have no doubt some will probably be difficult to locate).

Wildfire - Dennis Brown & John Holt (Emmanuel Music) producer Dennis Brown

Time Is The Master - John Holt (Moodisc) producer Harry Mudie

Redder Than Fred - King Stitt & John Holt (Studio 1) producer Coxsone Dodd

My Heart Is Gone - John Holt (Sunshot) producer Phil Pratt

Ghetto Queen - John Holt (Volcano) - producer Henry 'Junjo' Lawes

You Are Wrong - John Holt (Jackpot) - producer Bunny Lee

Another great reggae artist gone. RIP.

John Holt was certainly a fine singer and made some great, sometimes influential music. I think some people were put off by his choice of material for 1000 Volts Of Holt. Although commercially successful, the album and its singles seemed aimed at the easy listening market. IMO he made far better music before and after. Like so many, he was particularly good live (from the clips I've seen).

Very nice selection! For those unable to find the 45's those titles are available on CD, with the exception of "Redder Than Fred" and "You Are Wrong" it seems (which is strange in the latter case given the multitude of Bunny Lee collections that are around), I had never heard them so thanks for pointing them out.

I won't argue with this but I think there is room for those tracks as well. I may be biased because I heard Kris Kristofferson as a toddler, but I mean how can you not like this:

To balance the above here is the other end of the spectrum:

Not trying to overwhelm the thread with links and songs, just keeping it alive and going for a little while longer as a tribute to the great man.

Just saw this as I have been in the Internet boonies for a few days.

I had a hard time finding his releases prior to Amazon. Despite that, he was a favorite of mine. RIP
