"Johnny Cash: Forever Words is a collaborative album consisting of 16 songs created from Johnny Cash's unknown poetry, lyrics, and letters set to music by an astounding array of contemporary artists including Chris Cornell, Ruston Kelly & Kacey Musgraves, Rosanne Cash, Alison Krauss & Union Station, Brad Paisley, Kris Kristofferson & Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp, Elvis Costello, and more.

For nearly 60 years, the words of Johnny Cash have reached across cultural, spiritual and ideological borders. He was not only a singer of great songs, but a teller of universal truths about justice, faith, love, and independence. It was in this spirit that Johnny Cash: Forever Words, was created.

Recorded primarily at The Cash Cabin Studio in Hendersonville, Tennessee and co-produced by John Carter Cash and Steve Berkowitz, Johnny Cash: Forever Words is also the musical companion to the best-selling "Forever Words: The Unknown Poems," a volume of Cash's unpublished writing edited by Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Paul Muldoon."

    Tracklist:
    1. Forever/I Still Miss Someone - Kris Kristofferson & Willie Nelson
    2. To June This Morning -Ruston Kelly & Kacey Musgraves

I think it’s interesting to have Chris Cornell on there. After all, Cash recorded Cornell’s Rusty Cage and also did a collaboration with Soundgarden guitarist Kim Thayill if I remember correctly (along with Willie Nelson) Cornell has also released songs in a wide variety of genres, not just the alt/metal of Soundgarden.

This sounds interesting! Too bad Rosanne and Carlene didn’t record a song together...

I'm really liking the new song. Very haunting, and Cornell has done a great job putting the words to music. He makes it his own while it's still evident it's a Cash-penned lyric. RIP. Really good stuff, now I'm pretty interested to hear the rest...

Cornell was underrated. Even by me - I didn't realize how much I liked him when he was alive, and I have every SG/Audioslave/solo album and single. I still didn't appreciate him enough. The dude really was the voice of a generation. And he got better with age. Would have loved to hear where he was headed musically.

    Money grab.

    IMHO, of course.

Yeah, but Johnny isn't around to record new material so you have to come up with new and creative ways to keep the money coming in.

Yeah, this idea of getting a job yourself and not living off the dead is just . . . unreasonable!

Uh, all the artists featured on this compilation have established careers of their own, as do the producers...

I'm talking in general terms about the people who own the rights (which are almost always not the producers and performers) of deceased artists, and keep on reissuing, remixing, reworking (i.e., "cannibalizing") their "legacies."

I should have made clear in my reply that I do not think any of JC's descendants fit that description, and that I was talking about the situation in general.

    Mea culpa.

I've listened to this album a half a dozen times so far and it's grown well on me. Most of the songs are very good to excellent. A couple of "okay" songs.

You can really hear Johnny Cash in these lyrics and it gives an interesting perspective into how important his lyrics were for his own songs. The contributors to this album brought the goods and the passion, respecting Mr. Cash.

I have to give this a final boost. Ethics of John's son aside, there are some fantastic songs here. Rosanne, T Bone, Mellencamp, Carlene, even Paisley (who I do not listen to normally).
It's going to be one of my favorite releases this year.

  23. My son gave me this album a couple of weeks ago. Just out of the blue. What a great album. What a great son.
