The perfect distillation and sublimation of "Heavy Metal" in the strictly unadulterated literal sense of the term.

In 1988 if someone told me Judas Priest would wipe the floor with Iron Maiden on their next respective albums, I’d have laughed in their face.

    Absolute Stunner of an album!

I know there are threads for every band and artist, but it doesn't hurt to open a thread about a specific album to have a little chat, right?

This album is so powerful and epic. Every time I play it I'm uplifted and I feel like the King of the world and to go out and burn the road

Scott Travis was a huge, much needed shot-in-the-arm at the time for the band.
Also I wonder why they never worked with Chris Tsangarides ever again, it’s a fantastic sounding album. I suppose with Rob leaving everything got messed up.

I went with "very good." It has a top 5 Priest tune in my book (A Touch of Evil), another that would rank very high for me (Night Crawler), and a handful of others I really dig (One Shot at Glory, Metal Meltdown, Hell Patrol). I am not a big fan of the title track like many are, but I get why it is so loved.

Monster drummer, who came from Racer X, and I believe were fans of Priest... they recorded a great version of the Priest written Heart Of A Lion...

Only a good album for me. Kinda let down again like from the prior two albums. They didn't have to do speed metal - they are Judas Priest.

I could have seen them in Dublin on this tour. Kicking myself to this day for not doing so.

I don’t think it’s as good as people make out, it has a couple of standout tracks, plus the title track which is obviously killer.

I didn't purchase this album until the reissue. I really like the bonus track "Heart of a Lion." Sometimes I like it better than the Halford solo version and vice versa. The title track has grown on me. I wonder whether they listened to this song for the intro:

My feelings exactly :righton: It's an insanely energetic album, a true heavy metal feast. It doesn't pretend to be anything else, it has no artsy aspirations. Just an outright metal statement - and an exceptionally strong one! It's also cleverly crafted, mixing fast and brutal material (Painkiller, Metal Meltdown, All Guns Blazing) with more melodic, '80s-styled songs (Leather Rebel, Hell Patrol, One Shot at Glory). One of the definitive works of the genre.

Of course I voted for "excellent" :)

I forgot to mention that GT's solo on Painkiller is one of my favorites by him. He takes Yngwie style arpeggios, Van Halen tapping and Randy Rhoads style runs and uses them all in his own style. His whammy bar on the solo is crazy good.

The OP's description venerates this album deservedly, succinctly.

Priest are among the true Heraclean
masters of metal, their name cast for the ages in colossal titanium entablature, atop the towering colonnade high at the summit of the Acropolis of Thunder!

This is one of the few albums that I can say that has no bad/mediocre song.

I've never heard the LP, but the title track was the first thing they released after winning the infamous court case.

I thought the song should have been called Pain Inducer, because that's what it did to my ears. I'm still pleased they won the case though.
