Any feedback on DCCs Judy Collins?
I have the LP version of her "Greatest Hits" release on DCC. I also have it on an HDCD from 1997 or 98 and an old LP that I have on Elektra.
I have compared common tracks ("Both Sides Now") to an early pressing Elektra of Judy's album "Wildflowers" and the "Wildflowers" sound is much superior to ANY of the "Greatest Hits" versions. I don't quite know why this is. Perhaps Steve Hoffman can give some insight as to which master tapes he used versus those that were used by Jac Holzman (spelling??) on the original albums. The "Wildflowers" LP that I have has more well-defined bass, less "ringing" on the harpsichord solo that opens the song, more warmth than ANY of the "Greatest Hits" versions.
I would have to believe therefore that the "Greatest Hits" tracks were some generational copy from the master used to press the first LP version of "Wildflowers". Sorry, but on this one, I'd have to go with the Elektra original. The DCC version isn't, on the whole, that much better than the Elektra HDCD.
